So I said.....

Last year started about 60 varieties......so I said this year I would never do that again.  Yet it is only November and already have 42 new varieties rooting, heck a lot of people have not even trimmed the trees yet.    I said I was stopping at 50 varieties........then it was 60......I drew a line in the sand that 100 is my limit.......but heck 150 is really not more than 100 right???....  Going to be a busy winter.

Today I bought and trommeled (screened/sized) 16 CF of perlite.

Way to do it Willis. Don't even let up. LOL

lightweight. . .

Don't stop till you get enough.  No one's broken the 10,000 variety ceiling that I know of.

I only wanted a half dozen or so. That was 100 plus varieties ago

i kept my words. i only have 1 going, and it's Kathleen's Black for my son's project. :)

Very nice. Its already in my head that I may need to move to a warmer climate so I can grow more varieties. Looks like you'll be pushing 500 in no time :).

why would anyone want 100 different varieties??.......cause he/she doesn't have room for 101 different varieties.

Re: Posting #1

...." I drew a line in the sand.....yada, yada, yada" ........

I recall that someone else "drew a red line in the sand" .....just a few months ago....and made world-wide news!

Wills....it don't mean much!  Life is short.  Get more figs.

Frank

You're my hero Willis!

Bam, you are a beast!!! Don't fight the feeling!!! I just sold more of my blues to make room for figs so I feel your pain!

You make me feel so Inadequate. I have not obtained any cuttings yet.

Last winter I rooted 125.  I'm down to 60 plants since then.  As the trees get larger in pot size, I quickly realize I can't take care of more than about 30 ultimately, due to winter storage space.  I think I got caught up in the fun of what I could root last year.  Anything can change though!

Same here. Eventually shooting for 25 of the best. Even then that may be too many.

When I started I only wanted one mission fig.

Sigh... Now I actually don't know how many varieties I have, but it's a healthy number. I'm almost afraid to tally them up. And I have duplicates of most.

The people I've promised trees in pots to are asking for them. Alas I want to keep them all, lol. But I won't.

I do have a few cuttings I'm expecting to arrive this winter... so while I'm at it...

This has been serious fun!

Very funny! I'm a fig sinner too...

Actually, IMO, an average family only needs
1, 2 or (tops) 3 of any good/producing fig
trees in order to enjoy ripe-off-the-tree fruit.

Hi,
Not sure about the number of different sort of trees one would need. Three is not enough for me .
In 2011, I had figs from dalmatie, sultane, unkown italian, longue d'aout. And it was really fun to go through the differences. I would say that ten is a better option for me .

I said I  only need 3 then I ended up with about 50, now I am down to about 24 in pots and 6 in ground which will go back up to 8 in ground, next year I really need to cut down to about 5-6 in pots, too much works dragging all of them back and forth, the winter protection is not so bad, only wish I didn't have to do it in december.

i said 6.. sounded like a good round number to me. then started looking for different figs.. just on taste. keep adding and now i think i have somewhere in 70 trees and 45 varieties. all the ones that gave great taste on the first try will stay for sure. ones that i know will improve in time will stay.. others will go to trash can. right now i have about 10 varieties that i know i'll keep for sure. just have to keep tasting to find out what will taste good and what will work in my climate.

How does one obtain so many cuttings? I mean ho does one even obtain cuttings? I was lucky enough to get some conadria cuttings from a very generous member. Is there like an underground trading/selling tunnel here that I don't know about? LOL. I've been trying to buy cuttings on here for a while now and not much luck. I'm wondering if its possible to obtain a variety bundle that I can buy. I've never had much luck on ebay because the bids are always high..i wish I had that luxury :(  Someone should sell a "starter" bundle for newbies like me. Yeah!

Let me know when you find it. Oh, that's right, I'm supposed to be going to my Figs Anonymous meeting tonight:)

now I feel better with only 60 or so trees in pots, 45 or so Varieties, My mind at ease now....................

Guess that makes me a super light wieght with 27 trees and 15 kinds. But will be removing 6 as they have proved to not do good in as cold as climate I have. Right now I have cuttings from 6 kinds to root. However I think once I get what's on my wishlist taken care of I will be done at least for awhile.

Like they say.. fight figs with figs...  oh wait.. that's fire... nevermind.

Sherry,

Once you are around a while the members here are very generous.  Sometimes it takes a bit because people do join the forum get a lot of cuttings then they go poof so some of the members may be a bit reluctant.  It helps if you post an introductory thread just telling folks about what you grow and if you have anything to trade that helps a lot too:)   If you don't have items to trade I guess you could always go the bribe route lol.  Jon (Owner of the site) will have cuttings for sale in the winter.   People up north are just taking the cuttings now but those in the warmer areas like myself it will be awhile, heck we are still picking figs.
