Capelas
Figo Flores

are they all in US? i know nelson is in canada...

I doubt it, just like the Italian figs, there are many in the neighborhoods all over where I grew up in eastern MA, but inknown/unlabeled.  Many collectors here on the forum have Portuguese dark, Capelas, Madeira types, and the ones you have. Each year when I go home I usually get a cutting or two from older men that know my uncles and cousins. But as I said, no clue what they are until they mature.

Bass has one available on Trees of Joy now

Very productive, sweet, and adaptable to the cold climate. We collected this fig from a Portuguese immigrant who brought the tree from Portugal. This fig has been grown in Bethlehem, PA since early 1900's. Excellent tasting fig. Fruit size is medium to large. The tree will also produce a light breba crop that is excellent tasting also.

I have Abebereira, Bêbera Branca, Doce, Preto, Capela, Lampiera, Pingo de Mel, Encharia preta (smyrna), and many unknowns labeled as Black Portugal, Yellow Portuguese #1 and #2, Black Portuguese, and Chris's unk Portuguese.

sue, we have to talk...

Hi Pete
Thanks for mentioning those figs . Unfortunately their circulation is very much restricted outside borders with the exception of the UE . As Sue indicates, along the years several varieties ended up in the Americas (North and South) taken mainly by the emigration flows. People here do attach great significance to the fig tree and when they move to far away places take sticks with them for planting close to their new places. Once the Laws (there and here) restrict the movements of plant material, an alternative could well be an approach to the local various national clubs/associations to find out the potential for obtaining some material from them , by the time they prune their trees. I am confident that along the many years they know now the best and most adaptable varieties. One may get a lot of information from this people

Oh, yea, forgot Black Madeira, silly me!

Pete,
Are you looking for anything specific? I've got half a dozen or so.

I bought some straight from Madiera Island this year. Black Madiera, Flat Madiera and Berbera.

 ... and Portuguese Purple.

Also F4F varietal pages show a few under 'Portuguese ..."

Don't miss out Dark Portuguese(Bass) & Moscatel Branco(Adriano).

thanks all for the information. i think i killed about 10 plants in last 1 week due to giving wrong lime to my young plants. so i have rooms opened up for new plants. thanks to very very generous forum members, i have 3 new varieties one of which is Moscatel Preto. also I-258 which i have been hear rather similar to Black Madeira. and i should be moving my 1 gal Figo Preto to larger container sometime this weekend.

about dark portuguese (black?)
Wiered things happend to me this week.
i had a branch of dark portuguese that didnt want to root.
i was tired from it so i broke it to two with my hands and push it into the cup with dirt /soil- 3 days later i see roots in the cup.

when.... the going gets though or is it the opposite....? :)

Hi Elin,
that sounds interesting ! When you say dark port., is it the name of the fig as you got it ?
A long time neighbor says that when selecting and picking his cuttings for propagation (never less than 75 to 80 CM in length), he never uses scissors,  he just bends and brakes the selected branch and without any trimming it goes like that to the dirt . And he is not alone, many others do exactly the same claiming that they stand a better chance of rooting that stick quicker and with stronger shoots.

My question on the fig name is because although having around here dozens of more or less dark figs NONE is called Dark Portuguese. So. I am always curious when I hear that popular name ( in the US fig communities and nurseries).. What fig will it be ? That is another one I have to find out!!
Francisco

This is all very interesting. I work in Fall River, MA. which has a huge Portuguese population. I've recently just located a very good size fig tree in someone backyard that they had covered up all winter. Wondering how to approach them and inquire about the tree and obtain some cuttings.

In addition, I have co workers that return to Portugal almost every year. What are the rules for bringing back cuttings? Or would it be better to give them some cash and have them mail the cuttings back to me?

ill stick to the original nomenclature next time :) we should strive to make fig cultivation as scientific and exact as possible...
anyhow maybe breaking the branch assumes the same beneficial effect as scoring or scratching it.

RLMike it is easier to import ipads and iphones than live material..... your friends would be in much pain if the custums catch them...-beter you take the risk yourself maybe? or mail it as a present ?

Ask the guy or lady who owns the house and talk to them about their fig, tell them how beautiful it look sand where it comes from etc and tell them you really like figs I would like to try a cutting etc from it.

Chivas -maybe he can wait for the summer and wait for the tree to send shoots to the street?

i do that all the time randomly taking branches the come out of fences....
i even took pitaya cuttings this way.

started rooting Moscatel Prego yesterday. very health cuttings. looking forward to the figs in next yr or two.

Hi Pete,

Just to satisfy my curiosity went to Google and inquired for Moscatel Preto ...was given this page:..

https://www.google.pt/search?q=moscatel+preto+figs&client=firefox-a&hs=6Cs&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Y36aUY7EEOiu7AbXnoCQCQ&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=598

This Moscatel Preto is indeed 'black' as I have seen it under its southern  name of 'bêbera preta'. Have no pictures with me now but will get some this season to show.
This same link also shows other varieties which may confuse people.
All the best in your efforts to root those Moscatel Preto cuttings
Francisco

I have Bêrbêra Prêta. She is now 20" tall. Talk to me in fall.
