so i'm really into portuguese figs...

I hope this season to have both Bebera Preta and Moscatel Preto, apparently two different varieties ,one sourced in the North (Moscatel) the other from the extreme south (Bebera) approx 500kM apart.
Will then see how different they look and taste.

Does anyone know if Lungo Del Portogallo matches any of the Portuguese figs?  This type is from Italy, but the name (which translates as 'Portuguese Long', or 'Long From Portugal') sure implies that it likely came from Portugal to Italy at some point.  Does anyone know if it matches another Portuguese variety?  Jon has it listed under Lungo Del Portogallo, and I have a tree of it.  (I don't have the other Portuguese varieties mentioned though, so I can't compare... will be willing to send scion once my tree gets enough size to be able to take cuttings).

Francisco,

What's the name of the figs in the 3rd pic. They are making my mouth water.

franciso,

as always, they are wonderful. i hope some will find their way into america some day.

Hi Kubota1.

Thank you. These are VIOLETA figs. This name has been its real denomination for the past 150 years
They are in fact of a particular flavor, sweet and syrupy-

Wow they are gorgeous !!!!

Francisco this moscatel preto originated from the Minho region. Although moscatel preto and bêbera preta are generally the same this moscatel preto is clearly not a Bêbera preta. Also had a moscatel Branco from Porto that resembles or possibly was the same as white Marseilles.

I got the moscatel preto from my fathers neighbor who brought two plants in his suit case lol.

Pete,
Thanks. I am confident that by the hand of emigrants, friends, travelers...they are most probably somewhere in America for quite some time. They always took with them sticks and/or small rooted trees of their best varieties and these plus some others are definitely the very best.
Francisco

JR,

Thank you for your appreciation. These figs may root and grow anywhere but, they do need a lot of SUN
These on the pics are all from grown up trees in ground  without any irrigation at all.

Nelson,

Thank you

I may clarify this this season. but in the Algarve region (south) we are more faithful to the original names, but in the North, if along a road you see 20 houses all with the SAME fig on their backyards, inquiring for the name, you will get a lot of different names.
Growers and nurseries as well do change the names

Here,  the popular Pingo de Mel has also the following names:

MOSCATEL BRANCO - SETE CAMADAS (*) -  and on some places:

MOSCATEL D'ODEÁXERE - RAINHA - MATERNETA - PASSARINHA (??)

(*) - meaning prolific sort of everbearing which it is in fact

cheers
Francisco

Very tasty looking figs. Thanks for the pic's. Keep posting them Francisco. I hope to get some nice ones this season with my green house and more next year.

Paully,

Thank you. I would be very happy to hear one day (not too far away) that you all had tried and successfully managed to grow and taste these figs on your own backyards , orchards, balconies, farms...
The fact that,  contrary to a number of Med countries, the Caprifig was kept here for centuries, many new figs are born in Nature every season. Many, probably excellent, are born, grow, live and die without we even knowing that they were there..
Soon I will prepare and send a few pictures to illustrate what I am saying
Best of health and good luck with your figs
Francisco

francisco,

when you have some time, can you post a picture of Violea leaves? would like to see what it looks like. Violeta reminds me of Black Madeira fig i have seen posted by jon. thanks.

Pete,

These are pictures taken at the very beginning of its rooting in March.
But the leaves are already there.

If we were in a guess game I would say that you seem to be closing the distance.

Cannot post an update as this cutting was given to a friend who did not get off my shoulder until the day he took the small pot with the young Violeta.

Tell me what do you think. Later I am planing to get to the adult tree and take pictures of diff angles of branches, leaves and fruit in diff stages of maturation.

francisco,

those leaves are very clean. and clearly showing 3 lobes. all my Black Maderia has FMV and they show single and 3 lobes. probably different figs. thanks for the pictures.

Jack, are those in the pic in ground? If so, what others do you have in ground?

Those are in 20G pots against my fence line. I have Celeste, Chicago Hardy, Italian Everbearer, and an Italian Red in the ground

Pete,

Have just created a new topic on the Violeta showing more of its leaves and the littke fruit.
This one is from an adult tree,  has no FMV and the leaf contour seems to match some other variety.
Francisco

Hey.
I am looking for cuttings from a Lampeira with the green skin fig. Im guessing these might be the Lampa Branco? Anyone have any suggestions on where I can get some of these cuttings?

Welcome to the forum. Since you are in Canada, Adriano's would be a good start. He lists it.

Thanks Figgary.

I did phone Adriano a week or two ago, but he told me that he doesnt sell cuttings. I might have to contact him again next year about buying a rooted plant if I cant find cuttings anywhere.
