Sodus Sicilian

I was so impressed by this fig last summer. It has a very unique peachy flavor and it seems to be rooting very well this winter. I rooted about three so far, but I don't want to hack up my tree too badly. I also air layered one this summer. I think Nick has been very responsible with this amazing find. I am probably going to study it a little longer ( especially to see how it fares after this winter) before I start to trade some of mine.

Glad to hear. Let me know.

I'll look forward to hearing more. It's really neat how people on this site have saved so many cool fig varieties from extinction. Who knows what would have happened to Sodus Sicilian if you hadn't found it. It may prove to be the hardiest fig yet.

I didn't keep up with this thread once I started my 2014 Douglassville "live thread", you can see several of the figs I got in the greenhouse late this fall in that thread.

The figs were lighter in color in the greenhouse as most varieties seem to be for some reason.

Bill I am glad to hear you have had luck rooting it! Please let me know your secret as I am still having a terrible time with getting it to root! Out of the two successful rootings I had last year, yours grew much faster although mine tried hard to catch up :)

This year I only kept a couple of cuttings for myself in hopes of dispersing the fig more. The others I have heard from had poor luck in rooting it as well. I will definitely have to air layer some this year.

You know it's funny I have another thread going looking for a fig from Calabria and Carini came up which happens to be from Sicily.  I was looking at pics and you know this one looks very much the same.  Could it be the same cultivar?  FiggyFrank introduced Carini to the forum I believe.

I'll check it out Tim!

Sodus Sicilian:

Nice looking fig

Those look quite nice, what a great discovery! I do see some similarity to Franks Carini unk in the leaf pattern, could it be in the EBT family? Wonder how it compares to Laradek BT....? The fruiting pattern seems similar as well. Thanks for sharing.
