SOFÊNO PRETO

Already described and shown last season in this forum, Sofêno Preto is a Cachopeiro fig, of very high qualities. Extremely sweet (*), it mixes the flavors and aromas of the dark berries. For some reason it attracts birds like a 'magnet'. Few people cultivates now this excellent variety
At the proper time its brebas of a very nice green (hairy) color drop. Now, at the height of Summer, we may see a few figs developing on its last year wood
(*) when caprificated.

What is cachopeiro ?

John

great pics as always, francisco. i'd also like to know what john asked.

Thank you Susie and John,

The Portuguese official classification for the 'two crop' figs (breba and main crop) differentiates on their pollination requirements:

- San Pedro requiring pollination for the main crop , ex. Lampeira Preta, Bravinha, etc..
( you also grow several varieties of this family of figs in the US)

- Cachopeiros , the main crop matures, ripens like any parthenocarpic fruit, thus no pollination needed
( again, you grow many varieties of such family) In Portugal there are currently over 30 varieties of Cachopeiros.

Francisco

Excellent color and the bonus is that it is delicious for you. Francisco, you have a bunch of excellent figs.
In Canada, theres more known cultivars in Toronto area than here on the West Coast of British Columbia. The ethnic community in Vancouver is large and there are many fig trees and I am sure there are many hidden unknown gems known as Black or Green figs, even at the Italian center there are a few unknown fig trees.

This is a great looking fig.
Do they sell these in stores also or only for fig connoisseurs /collectors?

ok didnt read your whole post ---weekend is near :)

Francisco, Beautiful fig!
My young son would be all over that one.

Francisco i wonder if you could add vodka to ripening figs by a syringe? it would be fig wine on a tree  with this one :)

Thank you Paully, Eli and Art..

Paully that's correct, people coming from distant places always bring a sample or two of their beloved fruit trees which they cultivate and tender for generations,...in many cases it is the very best they had in their native places,..through times, the real names are either forgotten or changed in the new adopted language.. Who could guess that BM was the 'figo preto' ?

Eli, no, this variety is not at all commercial, the reason being that there not many to sell! Only the real old ones know about 'sofêno preto'. Inchário Preto, and Bêbera branca are now showing up in force in all markets in this district, follows 'Bourjassotte branco' and Violette de Solliès. Prices came down to 2.5 euro per kg.
Will try that vodka recipe !

Art, your young son has a fine taste!!

Francisco

Looks great, Francisco!
