Soil?

Just a curious question from a newbie. What soil do you experienced ladies and gents use for potted figs?

Mixed very thoroughly

Very coarse builders sand - Lowe's
Landscaper's mix - Lowe's
Cow manure compost - Lowe's

Drains well, almost too well

Perlite and compost.

Mine grew well this year in 2 parts compost, 2 parts peat moss, 1 part Perlite. 1 cup of lime and 1 cup of organic fertilizer per 5 gallons.

I use pro mix bx

Equal parts ground cover bark, peat and compost.

50% Pro mix hp and 50% very coarse perlite #4.

I mostly used 4 parts Miracle Gro Garden soil or Miracle Gro Tree and Shrub soil, both of which are mulch based mixes, and 1 part perlite.

Lowe's private label for the above was used to save a few bucks and it worked just as well.

How well is the miracle grow mix working out?

Composted Pine bark fines (Landscapers mix and or Compost, they are almost identical here, by HappiGrow, at Lowes) plus 1 Tablespoon dolomite lime per gallon of mix.

Fertigate with 1/2 tsp Miracle Grow All Purpose, and 1/4 tsp Epsom salt per gallon of water.

If your water is acidic, lots of iron for example, you may need to adjust regimen, or add more lime.

How do you guys and girls think that a mix of 50% garden soil and 50% crushed pine bark would work?

I use Espoma Organic Potting Mix. Not too heavy, not too light. Has earthworm castings and micotone. Works great as is.

Plants seem to be doing ok, some great. I haven't lost any and quite a few have figs. This is my first year with cuttings and buying small fig plants off ebay so I really have nothing to compare to. I find Lowe's garden soil and their tree and shrub soil works as well as Miracle Gro and it's cheaper.

I have used These same soils in the garden for veggies and they grow like they are on steroids.

Oh okay

Oh its the regular miricale grow garden soil, not the potting soil?

Use the search feature either here, on ourfigs, or on gardenweb, and you will find 100s of posts on soil mixtures. You can also find 100s of videos on you tube

Out here its hard to source pearlite...maybe i need to look harder.

What I am using with a bunch of suckers from the base of my (eastern) brown turkey consists of: native sand (too fine really), some cyprus mulch, fish tank pebbles and peat moss.

Seven fig trees are doing fine in it, some watered down miricle grow in summer helped too.

Oh okay
