Sold figs

Picked 19 lbs of Celeste figs last night and took them to a local farmers mkt this morning.  Sold out at $5.00 a pound, I think the price was a little low as no one batted an eye.  Another guy was selling by the gallon at $25, did not sell any.  That is about the same price but no one wanted the larger quantity.

This was the second picking in the last 6 days on a tree that is at best 10 ft tall and 10 ft in diameter.

Good for you ! And them !! :))

Nice. That's my fantasy - to retire and sell the figs from my grove at the farmer's market. It may have been you that sold - not just the smaller quantity.

Good Stuff....over here we have so much that we let the chickens jump into the trees to eat them....LOL

Just kiddin....my friends uncle lets the chickens eat them all.....I was dumbfounded.......One's persons trash is another man's treasure...LOL

Hey DKT
I think its a fair deal , here they go for 25 shekels per kilo which is a 30 % cheaper, but at a farmers market the price should be more expensive cause its organic produce.

The reason i dont like to go to a local market is i always argue with the sellers and they are pushy here- like:
"you have to buy this-its cheap"
"because of people like you were are in economic collapse"
"only today" tomarrow its cheaper :)

they  also write the price in the front of store but once inside they change the label of the price.

anyhow much more relaxing to buy in the supermarket as the humidity outside here is high...

did you try to sell jams too?

Wow, congrats!!  I wish I had known.  None of my sources here are ripe yet.  =(

Heh, my parents lived in Israel in the '70s, and have some very entertaining stories about bartering in the different shukim.

If I ever get these things in the ground, that is something I'd love to do.

@Elin- I have just finished canning 12 jars of "Fig Butter"  it is like Apple butter only made with figs.  After many attempts I have found that you can use most Fig preserve recipes and reduce the amount of sugar.  It is a personal taste thing.

I sell the preserves and butter for 75 cents per ounce, $3.00 for a 4 oz jar.  No one seems to mind the price, no one else is doing the butter.

OBTW - one lady said it was too much, I said "Ma'am the tree is about 6 miles down the road, out in a field, and you are welcome to go pick your own and process them"  she decided my price was okay, LOL

That sounds like a really good price for your figs.  I don't think they would bring that much in my area since so many people have fig trees.

It is amazing how many people have trees and how many don't, LOL, this one couple had three trees but were too frail to pick them.  One couple picked them and did not know how to can so they eat some and end up throwing the rest away.  Some people are too lazy or busy to mess with them.  Everyone knows how easy it is to root cuttings but they buy my trees, go figure!

I'd buy them.  In OR they go for $6-7/lb but very few people have them.

Here they are 3 for $2.00 when you can get them. They are coming from California, some times good some time not so good. Brown Turkey

i wish i was in your area. i have never lived in a place where one could buy fresh figs.  to date, i've never tasted one.

susie

Susie, I've never shipped perishables before, but I know it can be done.  I bet fresh figs could be shipped to you.  Maybe someone one here would know how to go about it.  I will check with FedEx and see if/how it can be done.

Tamar,

Here in this little midwest town, we don't hear much Yiddish and my Yiddish dictionary isn't handy just  now.  What is "shukim"? I am with Elin: I don't like "pushy" when shopping, puffery, bait and switch.
