Yesterday I picked some pawpaws and a few figs. My kid and I like pawpaws very much, so we ate a lot. The wife does not like the pawpaw smell, so she had some figs. Great dessert. :-)) Here are a couple of pictures to share.

Great pics Wayne! My 3 pawpaw trees are just 3' tall so I'm a few years away from enjoying the fruit. What kind of figs are those?? Is that large one a LSU Gold? Tyler

Hi Likeo, Pawpaw tastes somewhere between banana and mango, with its unique flavour. Different varieties taste differently. There were a lot of discussions in this forum. :-))

Hi Tyler, Some pawpaw varieties bear earlier than others. Hope you don't have to wait for too long. :-) And yes, the large one on the fig plate is LSU Gold (from a 1 year old seedling).

Likeo, sorry for the confusion. By "seedling", I actually meant to say 1 year old seedling from a rooted cutting (not from a seed).

Hey Wayne, how do you like your pawpaws? Soft and green or brown and very ripe? To me, the vanilla custard rich flavor really comes out when they turn brown. That's my favorite way to eat them. But place them in the fridge and let them slowly ripen or they will turn black and rot if set out too long. I love the way they smell. But the smell is very tropical smelling. If you smelled the once, you will remember the smell!

Hi Dennis, I like ripe pawpaw, but not very ripe one. When getting very ripe, the fruit starts to give off some alcohol smell in addition to the aromatic smell, which is not very pleasant to me. Interestingly, my little kid likes the mango-flavored variety the most; I prefer the banana-flavored variety; my wife does not like eating them at all. Of course, all three of us love figs! LOL

Greetings, was out kayaking on the Patuxent River and Mattaponi Creek area in southern MD on Saturday and although we didnt find any figs, we did find many groves of Paw Paw. They were a bit over ripe, but smelled great!

Yes, Mark. There are lots of wild pawpaw trees in Maryland. Two weeks ago I went for a hike along the Billy Goat trail, and saw many pawpaws. Most of them are small though, compared to fruits of named varieties.
