Some kids have all the luck

  • JR

I started on a new job a couple months back and since I always have my “fig radar” going, I noticed these large fig trees on the property across the way.   I finally had the opportunity to ask for some cuttings when I saw the owner pruning his other fruit trees.  He told me lived there for about 27 years and all he knew about the figs was that they were white.  The house looks like it was built in the ‘30’s (maybe older, making these trees about 80+ years old) and his lot was probably the last of a larger ranch, which is all commercial buildings now.  I told him his kids were lucky to have forts in fig trees J.

That's incredible!  Let us know how the figs taste one day.

That is quite the site to see. Thanks for sharing, JR!

Wow!  Those are some big fig trees!  Keep us posted on the cuttings!!

What an amazing tree! I am lucky to have seen.. marvelous, huh?

Hi,
Incredible !
Those look more like plane trees from my area ...
With such trees, the guy may be sick of eating figs :) ... That could happen ... I'm almost sure ...
What about airlayering the trunk :) ... With a crane maybe ... Just thinking ...
Some say that with the thickness, comes cold hardiness ... If true, that one could stand -90°C or something like that

Thanks for the pictures.
I love the bumps and bulges on that tree , thats part of the reason(except being cheap) i am not using stakes for my potted trees, each one has his own shape.

Nice, strong, grown up old fig !
Ready for a drastic make-up...

Pruning its thick branches forking out from the main and dedicating each of them to take grafts of  the very best figs - one for  those nice whites another for darks, San Pedro, Smyrna and Caprifig.

The tree,..environment/location seem ideal but the owner could be difficult to convince

Just an idea.
