Some Pics I'm Bored

Worked in garden most of the day yesterday and my back is paying for it. So an easy day today so I figured I take some pics and share. I only rooted 3 cuttings this year but I do have Panache and Verdal Longue in Sm which I just might cup today and forget about them other than a little drink. These cuttings were started Feb 16 and went directly into cups same day I took them from tree. They were kept in my patio and have seen temps range from high 30's to 80 Not ideal rooting temps IMHO so here it goes Hope you enjoy
I used the cut cup in cup as Jon suggested I will report on how it works out when I pot up in the next week or two

Fig Row not much happening

Well here is something a little green to look at Late start this year mid Feb because of temps but it is getting warmer now

Hi Sal,
keep them pictures coming !
I can see more space available for a few more plants.  ; )
The VdB are very attractive when them leaves first emerge.
Gosh i was looking at my garden patch this morning its just starting to dry a bit on top, can never grow an early veggie crop cause i cant till it with my machine.
I wonder in future if the misses would mind me putting the plants around poll area whe we move, maybe i just stick them there and see what happens.  ; )
Thanks Sal it nice to see green plants from member.
I would post some pics but i have nothing green to show.

I can't wait until it's warm enough to plant tomatoes and bring my trees out.
it was 75° last week, then saturday morning it was 22°, you're lucky that you have a nice weather now. but I don't think I want to be in Florida during July.

Nice pics Sal,

Been wondering, What is that cage looking thing I see all over Florida in the back of the houses? Is it to keep the critters away?

Sal
Enjoy. Looking at the tomato plants sizes, your growing season seems to be about 3 months ahead of us. Sometimes after mid-June our tomato plants will look like that. Probably similar (but not as long) difference at the other end of the growing season so we get an early opportunity for thanksgiving for well cherished crops.

Akram,Sal, Bass and Martin,

I did not know there were so many Tomato lovers out there.
At the end of summer you gentlemen please remind me to send you some seeds of some real Whoppers.
I have given some to a couple members and one of them emailed me just the other day and said he planted some and they germinated in four days.

The vine grows quite tall ( 6' + ) and the fruit is quite large.
A Romanian friend of mine gave me some seeds a few years ago and been growing them since.

Include me in on that list.  I got half of my tomatoes transplanted from seed trays into cups today.  Lets just say ... I'm a little behind this year.  I hit my first pair of true leaves last week, so everything must go into a better potting mix.  I expect these should be ready to plant by end of April.

There are a few of us newer folks who are heavily into heirloom tomatoes and have some really, really good varieties.  I'm also into peppers, preferrably Spanish ones (Pequillo, Padron, etc.)

I planted my tomatoes and peppers outside yesterday and today. Night time temps may be a bit chilly yet, but my job is so physically demanding I figured I had better plant them while I had the energy and willpower. I've used those 'wall o'water' things before and my tomatoes did well, and I know that even though they held heat, the plants still got cold at night.

I grow some heirlooms, but with the root knot nematodes around here I do have to grow some hybrids if I want usable amounts of fruit.

Going to wait another two or three weeks to plant bush beans, squash and cucumbers.

Oh, and I potted up some figs today too.

Hi Sal,
none for me but thanks !
Family believe it or not does not use much tomato's , i use on sandwhich with soppressata or coocollo, mortadella with italian chesse. There picky i suppose.
I grow basically roma plum and  san marzano tomatoes to can for the sauce least  2 of the 3 family enjoys that .  ; )
I do grow regular tomato but only a plant or 2 plenty for me.
But thanks for the offer no insult intended. ; )

Thanks Martin and i will post more pics as season progresses and yes I do can for fresh sauce if I get a good crop I even like the cherry tomatoes to can and make fresh One of My favorite veg  is egg plant which i can also

Bass June, July and August can be brutal and you must be careful when working outside. I guess you change your routine and stay in the A/C and make use of the cement pond and the beach

Ottawan 2 plantings here 1 in Sept and again in Feb summer is to hot to grow most things other than peppers and of course FIGS FIGS FIGS

Rafed the cages you see are screened in mostly for them darn mosquitoes but also keeps critters out We spend a lot of our time on the patio Also I would love to try some tomato seeds as you can see it is small area

Jason its nice that you have the community garden Most here are to transient to get any thing like that going

Gooddaughter Rkn, insect resistance and heat tolerance are all factors to consider here in your choices but you have to give the heirlooms a shot

Jon sorry this went off topic and with that said lets get back to talking FIGS LOL

Hi Sal
how often in the hot months if no rain do you have to water the figs in containers and do you notice any slight drooping of the leaves during time when sun is direct overhead and then early morning leaves look nice and erect or are the leaves mostly normal looking during the hottest months.
Just curious as your area is so much different climate wise.

Martin I mulched the top of pot to help with evaporation and drying out. When plants start to leaf out and require more frequent watering I will put my saucers back to help I had no problems with standing water in saucers last year as long as its only for a few days and then I don't water as often

To try to answer your question about every other day on average but by observation was my best tool
hope that helps some
I was also thinking of putting some type of plug in saucers that i can pull out and reinsert for those times of to much rain Just haven't figured it out yet
