something different about figs this year.

first fig trees i had were from a nursery. they were rooted by the gene h. in spring and i got them in fall. the trees kept their leaves through out the winter months.

last year, before i killed all the first year cuttings, they also kept their leaves.

this year, i have about 25 cuttings, all good size and in 1 gal.. they are all starting to drop leaves. i'm rather surprised. i was thinking they were going to keep the leaves.

Black Madeira and Preto has dropped all their leaves. it's just one long stick stuck on the pot.

my older trees have all dropped their leaves also, there are few hanging on, but their are all spotted and not too far from dropping.

any idea why their are dropping the leaves? i cut the fertilizer on their back in July when the figs were swelling on the older trees.

Mine have done the same thing this year, only a couple i pulled the leaves off because of possible frost this weekend (I am trying to get the abscission zone to dry up before frost).  I think that they are falling off because of dormancy and they are having good conditions this year to do it properly, I fertilized until august this year and last year half July so I think it has to be temperatures and day lengths doing it because last year the leaves didn't come off until hard frost for me.

Pete, they are simply going dormant.  In spring, they'll leaf out again!!

Still kind of odd...  My figs usually turn yellow before dropping off.  I just sorta guessed that fig rust from all the rain just has them coming off quicker.

younger trees are all under the front porch they are not getting spots. they are just turning yellow and dropping. the older trees are out in the back deck. they have been left out in the rain and sum all season. they are mostly spotted, and turning yellow at the same time. well.. it's near Nov. anyway, and only handful of figs left on them. Kathleen's Black is about to give me 3 more figs soon. Paradiso Gene is having on also.. about 4 figs. i'm hoping with some late figs i have the season will be extended next year. june to late oct. isn't so bad..

Today,I noticed our old Celeste tree(about35yo) that had shed all it's leaves is sprouting new green leaves along with small figs.I hope that it doesn't expend much energy before the first freeze. The abnormal weather this year with a longer growing season must be causing the plants to get out of synch.

I recently had a peach and olive tree bloom and a couple of healthy growing fig bushes that I'm clipping new figs off about every day since the end of August.
