I love this idea. Count me in. Just name place and time and I will make plans to be there.

Gotcha Jeff! Thanks! No date chosen yet but I will choose one soon. I'm waiting on one more email. Fred I'll put together a list of foods to bring later. As for hotels, it really depends on where we hold the event and depends on other events you want to visit. In my opinion, there are 2 areas to research: the downtown area and the airport area. Hotels are more expensive downtown. I-77 and I-277 go through downtown. Museums theatres and Nascar hall of fame are all downtown. There are several hotels listed downtown. The Westin is everybody's favorite and close to everything. To see the other hotels, just Google Charlotte hotels and click on the map.

Hotels near the airport just have eating joints and are right off I-85. All are off Little Rock Road. Here are just a few:

Days Inn
Hampton Inn
Holiday Inn
Country Inn
Wingate Inn
Courtyard

Also, Col Beatty park is out, it too costly but, it's the prettiest park I've ever seen! According to the park and rec folks, the park doesn't get rented much due to its cost. But I will choose a location soon. More to come...

Sounds like a wonderful idea.  I am new to the world of growing figs and could certainly learn a lot from a get together like this but unfortunately its in conflict with a previous commitment.  Hopefully it will be a success and be repeated in subsequent years.

Currently growing Celeste, LSU Purple (not producing yet) and Brown Turkey inground.  Am rooting Kadota and Saribeyzek. Interested in suggestions for other hardy varieties to grow in ground.

Marianna
South Carolina/Zone 7B

Hello Marianna and welcome to the forum. I hope your plans change and you're able to come. We would love to meet you. You will learn a lot about figs all in one day and meet some forum members. Celeste and LSU Purple are excellent figs! But, there are so many other varietites of figs! I plan on taking some pics and a video of the event for those who can not attend. I hope to make this an annual event.

I have a small collection of figs. Here is a sample of my container garden.

again, welcome,
Dennis

Great looking container Garden.  I have set aside a nursery area where I keep and baby my pots till fall. Have a multilevel goldfish pond there with a nice rim about 10" wide that sits under the water surface about 1"-2". It has become my defacto bottom waterer. Bottom watering works better for me as well.

Will try to make the gathering but its hitting just before I leave for NY for my class reunion and then on to VT for a hike of the Taconic and Long Trails. Looking forward to expanding the number of varieties I grow and based on the recommendations of a delightful Turkish Daughter in Law, looking to grow and propagate some Purple and White Patlicans to share with her if they are suitable to this area. She is in zone 8 so cold hardiness is less of an issue for her.

REMINDER!   THIS IS STILL ON!

2013 Southeastern Fig Gig!!!

WHEN:   September 7th 2013

WHERE:  Coulwood Hills Club House
              506 Coulwood Drive
              Charlotte, NC 28214

Ready and waiting!

Definitely going to try to make room for this on my schedule. Lots to learn. It appears I have developed the ability to turn healthy newly leafed out rootlings into looking like things that should be confined to the scrapheap of history. Beginning to rethink my expansion plans moving away from what I would like to grow to more of a selection of aggressive growers capable of defending themselves from me. Outside potted babies and in ground plants are doing great, lots of growth, heavy canopies, oodles of main crop figlets and producing lots of green growth at the base of the plants ready for my next round of attempts at rooting cuttings. Have some nice potted babies (air or ground layered) to share but unfortunately, the varieties (celeste and brown turkey) are quite pedestrian. Parent plants produce tasty fruit so babies should too.

Wishlist: Any variety suitable for SE Zone 7B with a black belt in Karate.

That's good to hear Marianna.  You and my son will have a lot to talk about.  He's a big karate buff.  Was a Brown belt when he was 10 back in 91.  He drifted away for awhile but getting back with a dojo hear in Charlotte.  Everyone will go home with at least one fig tree and it won't be the normal Brown Turkey and Celeste.  I got a lot of trees and I'm having fun watching them grow.

I plan on holding an auction for a few rare trees for Jon's Figs4Fun Foundation.  So, bring your wallet, checkbook or ATM card!  The money gained will go toward Jon's foundation.  It's the least we can do in honor of Jon bringing us all together.

For those planning on coming to this event, right click on my avatar and send me an EMAIL, not a Private Message, an EMAIL.  I want to get every one's email so we can start chatting with each other so everyone can see everyone's wish list.

Dennis, email sent to you.

Got it! thanks Mike

Guys, Jon's having his fig fest on the same day our ours. I do want to attend jon's so Sept 7th is out for ours. So, let's take a vote.

All those in favor of:

Oct 5th:

Oct 12th:

Oct 19th:

Dennis, I am so happy you made this post. I am also planning to go to Jon's but I wanted to attend yours also. What will be the
availibility of figs if we wait until Oct 19 vs Oct 5th?

Oct. 12th is the best for me.  Still in VT on the 5th.  Unless we have an early fall, I will still be picking figs through the 12th. We usually escape the first frost and do not get a killing frost until end October or early November. 19th would be getting iffy in 7b.

Mike, I pick figs in October.  If we do it in September, how about Sept 21st?  Can every one make it on September 21st?

21st is ok by me. 19th might not be as I try to lead a couple of hikes/backpacks each month and that would be one of the dates on which I would normally organize an event.

Sep 21st is good with me

bump

Dennis, I will do my utmost to be there Sept 21 and bring a few 1 gal plants.

got my months mixed up.  Was thinking october for some reason. Will still be up north on the 21st of Sept. Rats!!

Bump to first page.
