Pons shared this video, wish I could understand what they were saying! But I still enjoy watching!

I only picked up a few words but, WOW the trunks on those trees was amazing! Thanks for sharing. That was neat. :)

This is the mother of all fig festivals. figs is part of their culture as you can see.

I will be trying my hardest to translate what is the most important they are saying.....they use some similar words in Spanish......One guy said something like " there are 50 figs and they have varieted to 2000 types...

Really nice, I only wish there were an English translation . Enjoyed seeing it though.

The food.......starting at the 12 minute mark.....I wanted to eat my monitor.

Gosh.. It is SO hard to understand what they are saying :( It is like Spanish with Portuguese pronunciation. I have a friend from Spain, will try to ask him for a translation.

Igor, it's on Mallroca where they speak Catalan, a blend of Spanish and French and your Spanish friend probably won't understand much of what they are saying unless he knows the language.

Yeap, I kept reading about it for the past 15 min :)
It is Catalan  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_language
I am not sure I can find anybody here who speaks Catalan but it would be an interesting exercise in itself.

Chivas/Harvy C:

Best,

Great video

I haven't seen all of the video, but at 1:28 a woman, begins asking questions in Spanish, and the conversation remains in Spanish until about 3:00.

Paul, I've watched the entire video 2 or 3 times.  Come on now....do you like figs or what??? LOL  I also saved a copy on DVD!  They are speaking "fig" and I can understand their passion by the look in their eyes and tone of their voices. :)

Harvey...thanks for posting that video...it was a very enjoyable 35min. in Mallorca.

Thank you Harvey for sharing this video
It's very interesting what Pons managed to do in a small Island bringing figs back to people's minds

You got me there, I was focused on the language part!  However I also was mesmerized by what I saw, and do need to watch the entire thing.

Great video.
It makes me wanna travel to Mallorca!

Strangely, like paulandirene mentioned at 1:28 a woman (black shirt) started talking spanish instead of catalan like the others...but at 3:00 she started to talk german to her older friend!
At first i thought i don't hear probably...

The older woman says: "Probier mal!" ("Taste this!)
And the woman in black replies: "Schmeckt?" (Tastes good?")
The older woman: "Aha.."

I Never thought of hearing some german in this spanish fig dream... ;-)

Mallorca here i come.
does anyone know if i can buy some cuttings from Mr Pons he has some special varieties?

Hi,

You probably never have been to Mallorca or heard of but the island if full of German tourists .
Did you notice the seller reply to her "auf wiedersehen" ?

If you fly to Mallorca , take your ninja suit with you and an extra case for cuttings: in the video, the first guy says they have 1800 trees of some 700 species some 80 years ago - when the guy was young?-, but some trees in the island got lost with the end of life of their owner.
You "could" find there species/strains ripening figs from March to December ...

I like the presentation of Rimada Martinenca from not ripe to ripe - but the man savaged 5 figs for that .

Amazing such big trees are in pots ! ... Here you can find some with big in pots olive-trees - but in fact those were raised in the dirt and potted for selling them in a pot ...

Some asked how to protect from heat ... they do it with squared-packed hay all around the pots - the fruits are disposed upon them.

Harvey, this is a great festival. When, where this event usually takes place If anyone knows please provide details...
There is no sound with the video!

I believe I saw it on this calendar of events last year but can only find figs mentioned as part of a melon festival September 6-7 this year: http://www.seemallorca.com/events/calendar.html?dates=01-09-2014-to-30-09-2014

You could ask Rafael Nadal. ;)

Edit. I just watched the video. Absolutely charming!

Sas, turn your speakers on and/or make sure the volume control in the lower right corner of the video is turned on.  I clicked on the original link and it plays with sound just fine.

Thanks Harvey. For some reason the sound button is muted and I cannot unmute it. It's no big deal. I don't speak Spanish. So I played the video with a very cheerful music on and it was very enjoyable. This place is on my vacation list now.
