Hello everyone,
This was my first time propagating fig trees and I thought, what the heck, why dont I get some random cuttings off a tree and try it.  Well, I did it with sphagnum moss in an old gallon ice cream container and after 3 days!!! I saw root initals and one root about a millimeter long two days after that.  So for those of you who havent tried propagating yet, just snip off some cuttings and throw it in a container with moss, and your good.  All i've been doing is opening the top and airing it out.  I have two large hardwood cuts and about four small green ones and All but one small green one has root initials.

Anyway, here are two pics of the leaves (i know its near to impossible to figure out the variety this way) but the figs are still green and theres no other way to recognize it.  I got it off a large tree in downtown baltimore (little italy), maryland.  So if anyone can 'sort of' identify the type, that would be awesome!

PS, i'll post updates and pics as soon as the roots develop a little more, i dont want to take them out again for risk of damage untill at least another week.

Oh!!! i forgot to say, i soaked the sphagnum moss for about ten minutes, then squeezed as much water out with my hand as i could, theres still alot of moisture in it, and then placed it in the uppermost part of my closet.  Yep, thats about all I did.

Was this live sphagnum?

Nope, its just regular dried moss from Home Depot.  I just make sure its nice and moist by checking the amount of water condensation on the sides of the container.

It seems it doesn't matter, live or dried. I rooted about 30 cuttings past winter in the dry moss. From my point of view what makes a huge difference is
Amount of moisture, temperature, light and the cutting freshness.
In a dark box, the roots will start sooner, in a light box the leaves may start first.
Obviously, you wants the roots first.

Yep, cant beat that feeling of raising those figs.
It all started from a brown turkey i got at the local nursery, i then ordered four baby trees from wellspring gardens, (black mission, atreano, green ischia, lsu purple). Now im trying to get my hands on cuttings of some varieties that grow well in the maryland area. I placed the order at usda ucdavis, and found out about encantofarms cuttings, but those are so far away!!! Haha, it seems childish, but thats just how it is when you get bitten by the fig bug.

Btw, if anyone is in the baltimore washington metro area and has some cuttings to offer, i dont have anything to trade yet, but i can buy them.
