splits in fig trees

was wondering if any body had the problem with fig trees splitting at the base at soil level? a friendofmine has a three yr old tree ,kept it inside in dark basement for winter. when he brought it out side he noticed the tree trunk at the soil split.what would cause this and how to remidy it to save tree? thanks much,  gary

Is there a photo of the injury?  What temperature did the dark basement get to?  Did the tree get dried out?

I have had fig trees split at the base after bad winters like last year.

Only time I have seen splitting is when the limb or tree is dead and starting to dry out.

I water my dormant fig trees stored in the basement about once a month just a liittle

they are in water from below pots from Wal-mart
