Spraying figs for pests

Hi,

Does anyone spray their figs with dormant/ horticulture oil? I need to spray my peach trees, so i was thinking if this was beneficial or detrimental to fig plants.

My dwarf peach trees are in containers, and i noticed last year that there were leaf hoppers chewing up the leaves.

Thanks.

never sprayed with anything. figs have very little pests, and never heard anyone specifically need scheduled spraying.

Spider mites and ants like fig trees, but they don't really do much damage.  A periodic blast of water will destroy the mites life cycle, and tanglefoot around the trunk will prevent ants from eating your sweet figs.

One of the main reasons I grow figs is because I have never had to, or know of anyone who grows figs, use pesticides or herbicides.  Can't say the same for apples, so I don't grow them.

Nope.

The only peach pests we have in Colorado are aphids and a trunk borer. The aphids can get to be a problem real fast and spraying could  be necassary until the lady bugs find your tree and aphids, after that they seem to come back every year and do the aphid work for you. The trunk borer likes to attempt to girdle the tree in it's younger years, so you either have to spray the base of the trunk a couple times a year(in the srping and early summer), or just keep a real close eye out for the tree exuding gel at the base. If that happens you need to dig them out and wrap it. I am in the spray is a last resort camp. My first peach tree expreinced both of these pests in a worse case scenario so I had to spray for them in years 2 and 3, then I never had to spray again.

A great solution for all fruit trees is indoor latex paint diluted 1:1 water and painted on the trunk and lower branches.  It prevents sunburn and borers.  Figs are susceptible to sunburn.  This reminds me to go buy some latex indoor paint in a light reflecting color, like pale green.

Hi,
here in figtrees, I have a leaf hopper/moth that is a pest - it eats the leaf surface by scratching it.
Every caterpillar that I spot is wrapped in the leaf it resides on, and squeezed in the leaf!
A bit boring, but manageable as my trees are kept at man size .
Especially for peach trees, try hanging egg-shells ! I don't know why and how it works - but it works for me !
Now I hang them in every tree; most figtrees included !
I was told that the plant of "forget-me-not" (little blue flowers) are good against pests - especially against
Common Green Shieldbug. True or not, I have several that I let grow each year ...
The name of the plant states something handy : they come back year after year with little care ! Some are blooming right now :)

What do the egg shells do for your fig trees?

Never sprayed fig plants there is no need.

Hi did you get an answer? I would like to know if you can put dormant oil on plants now just before covering for winter. Mine are out door trees. Located on niagara region and actually had a bit of snow today.

Hi Amalia,

Welcome to the forum.

If you suspect of something to affect your trees during  the dormancy period and while protected against the cold winter, you could always prepare a  full organic 'tea', the net has many cheap recipes and tells how to prepare, and spray the plants. -(preventive maintenance)
