Spring equals hard work

Yes, it is Spring time now; which means hard work.  I hope we've had our last cold front.  One moved through 2 days ago and some of the leaves on these trees are thin and wilted, but look healthy.  I've been dragging these guys in and out of my garage the past month.  Argh!!

I've purchased some new pots and repotted some of these trees.  Some have out grown their pots and I had to upgrade to a larger pot size.  Here are a few picture of what I have outside.  There are a few not shown plus I have more in my garage to bring out.  But first I have to repot them.  I have several VdB that I purchase online when the prices were 7 or 10 bucks so I jumped on them.  I also got a few Negronne tree purchased online.  But the majority seen here are in smaller pots that I propagated myself over the last 3 years.

Also what you don't see is my fig orchard.  I started it this year and will post some pictures this week end.  First I have to mow the grass and place mulch down so it will look pretty of the picture.  Enjoy, cheers,

Always enjoy your pictures and cant wait to see some ripe fruit that some of your figs (dark types) bear.   ; )

I've got to agree with you Dennis. At least I don't have to do the fig shuffle like some have to. Taking care of 40 or so potted yearling trees. 16 in grounds trees plus all the new ones I'm rooting this spring (50 to 60) is a chore. Besides that I plant a veggie garden which is coming along just fine. Potatoes are up and looking great, the snap beans and peas are coming along fine and the tomatoes have already set some fruit. These all need attention every couple of days. Like I said it's a chore, but a labor of love.

Snag, looks like fig heaven. I agree with you and Gene----lots of work, but a labor of love. It's what keeps me sane. I get lost out there and don't have to think. Very relaxing. Thanks for the pictures.

Us Yankees north of the Mason Dixion line have to work a little harder.

Dominick, that might be true or not, but we have to mow the lawns 11 months out of the year, and the growing season never ends.

Well we have to work a little harder for figs that is.

Hey I have a lawn! It's called crabgrass. The snow just tends to hide it.

Dennis,
I look forward to seeing the fig orchard and the irrigation system!  The local dogwoods and oaks seem to be saying we probably have seen the last frost, at least I hope so.

I planted my vegetable and fruit garden and have Husky cherry red tomatoes and watermelon.

It looks like the fig rust is already starting with this very humid air mass.  Time to start spraying the Bordeaux fungicide.

Hey Martin!  Thanks!  I am hoping for a lot of VdB figs this year.  My first fresh fig was from my Negronne that I purchased in 2006.  I lost that tree due to lack of knowledge about winter protection.  And the rest is history.  I now have 4 Negronne fig trees and I can't wait to taste the fruits of my labor.  Temperatures got down to around 37 degrees 3 nights ago.  I took a risk and left many outside and they did fine.  But those in the large containers, I hand carried back in my garage for the night because I had just potted them 3 days ago and now I'm getting them accumulated back outside and did not want to give them more shock from the weather.  But now, weather is in the 80s by day and 50s at night so everything is outside now to stay.

Gene, I've got 2 garden beds to start.  But mine will be above ground.

Hey Tim (in Texas), thanks.  Tomorrow I'll take some pictures of my orchard.

Hey Tim in Newport, I got a story to tell about the orchard.  Tomorrow is my day off.  I have to mow the lawn and stake up a few trees.  I have a design for my irrigation system.  Tomorrow I will know exactly how long my irrigation system  will be.  I'll take some pics and post them.

I ate my first fresh fig in NC, there was this huge bush on the south side of my barracks at Ft. Bragg. I ate so many I got sick, some were not even ripe! That tree was destroyed with the barracks before I even knew how to propagate figs, has always bugged me that it got bulldozed.

hello Dennis -- if you like VdB,  I would suggest you check out Saint Rita and Nero600m. Heard these 2 are better in taste than VdB. Envy your zone early start. Half of my collection is still in the garage  -- too cold in the nights.
