St. Jerome (in-ground)....pics

Here is a picture of my in-ground St. Jerome fig. The tree was top killed this past winter. Notice how productive this fig is from new growth from the roots. FYI, this is one great tasting fig too. IMO, it is the same fig as Lou (Elder's) Quantico fig, and the same fig as Joe Morle's Black Triana fig. It has a rich complex taste that I really like. There is a trick to growing this fig in a rainy area. The figs must be picked as soon as the skin cracks and before the eye opens up.......when rain is in the forecast. This fig tastes good when picked at that point. However, when allowed to fully ripen this fig develops an outstanding flavor.

Lovely plant and loaded with figs. I sure am glad I was able to obtain one of these last season unfortunately no figs yet but I will take good care of this one.

Dan, that is a impressive number of figs, for a plant that was killed down to the roots, just last winter. Will the fruit ripen for you this year?

Bob

Thanks for posting the picture Dan.  It is always interesting to me to see what peoples trees look like.  Nice looking fig orchard.

Yes, these St. Jerome figs will ripen for me this year. It is a very productive cultivar. My fruit orchard has sufferd quite a bit this year from our severe drought and bug infestations. Not a problem though, as I want to study their growing habits under ALL conditons.....
