Starbucks?

OK, just "Coffee". This is a seedling that grew up under my coffee tree. I guess I'll find out if it is any good, this year.

If it tastes anything like one of their $4 blends I will buy many (fruit, trees, whatever).

I have read that figs were often used to flavor coffee. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of a recipe? I would think with some freshly ground beans and some well dried fig (ground-up) it might work. Just not sure if the figs flavor would be strong enough to stand out.

I've been boycotting Starbucks for a few years so I hope it's better than they have to offer.

I've never observed what fig pollen actually looks like.  Does the pollen get distributed by insects, wind, or both?  I'm just trying to get a feel for the likelihood of cross-pollination among all of the cultivars you have going on.

Finally, how long did it take from germination your best estimate) and fruiting?  Just wondering how much perseverance is needed to wait and see the results from new seedlings.

This one was unusually fast. Sprouted 2006, and is about 12' tall and about 1-1/2" in diameter already. By contrast, of two seedlings from 2004, one has not fruited, and the other has two small fruits this season. Of 9 seedlings from 2005, only three fruited last year: one caprifig, one possibility, and one that looks quite promising.

Wow, that's some fast growth!

What about the pollen questions?  Are these likely to be hybrids?

I've been getting about (2) 5 gallon buckets of used espresso grounds per week from my local Starbuck's

It's a great soil amendment, good slow release nitrogen, and the earthworms love it and slugs hate it!

I have a friend that puts a dried fig in his cup, fills it with coffee, drinks the coffee and eats the fig.  He said it is the right sweetness for him.

This is definitely a seedling with promise. It is huge, juicy, but does have a large eye, though not a hollow. The second one was spoiled - we are having very high humidity for the second week. The skin is so pigmented that it stained my hans. Perhaps I'll name it Raspberry Latte.

Good name. The inside reminds me of a good rasberry jelly donut.

It's beautiful! Is that a dime next to it?

Silver dollar. OK, quarter.

Cupped 4 RL cuttings on 2/20 and have several 1/4" roots today on 2.  I know other of you got this as well.  Are you seeing the same kind of growth?

C.J.

Duh.  Correction.  I BAGGED them 2/20.  Cupped a lot of other stuff that day, but not RL.  Sorry

C.J.

Jenia,
i placed order with Jon for R.L and hope to soon find out when i get the scion, i'm going to try to root several different ways one a new way for me in an aeroponics contraption. Im really surprised that type did not sell out like some others did as it looks really enticing to me but maybe not others? I hope that it does not need any fig wasp to pollinate it.
It will be fun to compare how our fruit looks like to see if there is a difference from your east coast area and here in my area in years to come.
Best Health

I have small roots showing now on the bagged Rasberry Latte cuttings. Did root quickly, but looks like some others will soon follow.

I ordered it potted with a couple of other plants.  I'm curious, with the open eye, how well it's going to do in the southeast.  Looking forward to tasting it myself.

I blew it on my order with this one. I remember a few months ago thinking to myself that I needed to order this when cuttings became available, but I totally forgot about it until recently and I have already received my order from Jon. Already starting my list for next season... The ebay cuttings are making it tough to resist though.

Jon, is this a late or an early fig for you? I am thinking since it has an open eye it would probably do poorly down here in FL unless it was late enough to avoid the majority of the summer rains.

If this is a volunteer seedling, it would seem that the probablity is high that it will need pollination, and probably won't ripen fruit outside of the fig wasp's range.
Looks luscious, though.

It was a mid-later season fig, Does not need pollination. Cuttings are still available.

Raspberry Latte a beautiful looking fig does not need pollination thats good news Jon.
Perhaps more folks will try to obtain this type and try it after reading your post. It will be fun to compare in the future across country.

Being a mid to later season riper for you i should be able to get it to ripen along with my other plants then here in my zone being that i grow in containers and not inground once rooted it will reside next to my madeira.
Thanks Jon.

I was concerned by the open eye also, but I have others that do ripen some good figs, although many spoil. So, if I get some---I'll be happy. As Martin said, it will be interesting to see how it works out for everyone.
