Start with Larger Fig Tree?

I am looking for some fig trees that are already a good four feet tall (so that they can get sun over a row of apache blackberries).

The largest fig trees that I can find for sale are about 3 feet tall.

I have called every nursery that I can think of in this area.

Does anyone know of a source for "larger" fig trees?

Thanks.

At 3 ft, it will get to 7-8 ft by the end of summer.
This was my tree from a nursery in March of 2012, about 4ft.

Jo-Ann, such a great looking tree. I wish I have one like yours.

Beautiful tree JoAnn

mac, do you guys have armstrong nurseries in your area? Every year, they have 4 ft and higher trees, including VdB last year. I just went to my local store and they had kadota, black jack, and another honey fig (forgot name) this week. i think they order from dave wilson. home depot and lowes occasionally have that size as well, but i recommend calling them first to see if they are in inventory. these two stores usually have mission, and others, like kadota, desert king, and brown turkey

Of course JoAnn's in TX and you're in PDX where "The Sun Don't Shine".   :)

If you put the figs a few feet back from the brambles or a few feet in front of them or off to the side you should have plenty of sun for both.

Thanks for the help.

No, no armstrong nursery in our area.

I may just have to get the 2 foot Negronne figs, since I need a small tree, and that is the biggest "small" fig that I can find.

I was in the same boat last year. I created this directory on Fig nurseries.

Thanks, bin bin.

I called around, but was not able to find anything larger than 3 feet.

not sure you are close with this location, you may try him out.

"Desert king" fig trees are very common PNW due to weaker sun, I pick them up from craigslist with figs on tree.

Shorty's Nursery on Mill Plain in Vancouver, Washington had some large Brown Turkeys for sale last year.  I don't think they begin selling figs until later in the year. their phone number is (360) 892-7880.

Thanks again for those helpful replies.

I will look into all of those.

ainmfig,

Being in Portland, I am surprised that your local nurseries don't stock Dave Wilson Nursery (in California) fig trees. I picked up a DWN Black Mission Fig at my local Home Depot for $25 and it was 6 ft tall, 1/2"+ caliper with nice branches. All the DWN trees are like that.

groworganic.com also sells DWN trees. Disadvantage is you have to pay shipping. But you will get a gorgeous tall tree!
