Started four air layers on my REI fig tree

I started four air layers on some smaller lower branches on my REI fig tree.

Nice work, did a few air layers a few days ago myself. I enjoy watching every one of your videos, keep them coming.

Great video, Tom!

Tom, fantastic work.
You have calm hand for that kind of stuff.
Enjoying every video.

Great video, thanks!

Hi Tom ! Great Video !

If I use dirt with perlite instead of small bark, should I wrap the see-thru cup with foil paper completely ? (you did not in your video) or I can do either way, Is that too late to proceed air layer before Aug 3?

Yeah this summer is flying by fast

I still leave access to the top so I can water it.  I'm still going to do some more air layers this week and if there are not enough roots by the end of September I can always just leave it on until next spring.

Great video Tom. If it wasn't for your youtube videos, I would have never found this site. Keep the videos coming! Tom, where in Massachusetts do you live,i might have some rooted cuttings from my brooklyn unknown growing, my office is actually in Southborough and I will be traveling there in the next 2 months. Let me know if you want one and if that's anywhere near you.

As a side note from a newbie to the forum, someone should create a stickied post with links to videos found on youtube that can be referenced and used whenever someone has a question or wants to learn a new method. It would need to be maintained and updated when users find something else useful. I think tom has a very broad assortment of videos that should be included.

Thanks Tom, for taking time to educate and pass on the knowledge.

Hi Tom,

I am thinking to proceed air layering within this 2 days. It might be late to proceed but I want to try anyway. If by end Sept, it should be able to have some roots I hope, but how can I decide whether I cut the branch from the parent fig tree or leave it there till early Spring ?

In case if I cut by end Sept and put it in pot and store in garage before fall, that will make any different to leave it there and not cut from the parent fig tree. which way will you recommend ?

Thanks !

Sorry for jumping in like that. I would cut the air layer and pot it. By spring time you will have a full root ball. Roots grow more and stronger when the tree is dormant. Best of luck with your effort!

thank you for the video.I seem to like this way to air-layer I"m trying it now with pro-mix bx instead.

Hi Tom,

Thanks again for your comments. I just finished two air layer this morning in 30 minutes with fun and hope they will work out good by end Sept, I did the two branches near the truck with less sunshine, Is that OK or not ?

Hi Tom,

As mentioned I did two air layer of my fig tree on Aug 3 and it was my first time to try.. To-day is Sept 4, I was so excited to open the two air layers to see if they have many roots or not, but regret to say that I did not see any roots at all even I followed exactly what you showed through your video. Of course I was very upset and disappointed this morning when I saw such result since I did not do anything wrong for the whole procedure. The only difference was I did put hormone before I inserted with dirt and wrapped.

I'm doing an airlayer this way and it seems to work.I have tons of roots within 3weeks .

Very nice video thanks

REI air layer progress

I will let it as it is for another two weeks to see if possible get roots or not.

Good job!  It's a lot easier to air layer something in a pot than one in ground for sure!

Suzi

Do you overwinter with the mother plant or remove it for the winter ?

I got 3 airlayers with this method thank you.

I removed the REI fig tree air layers I started on July 31,2015.
