starting cuttings an inch and a half under ground

success rate of starting cuttings buried an inch and a half underground sideways.Seems to work pretty good for me.Comments anyone???

Do you water the cuttings?  Are they green wood cuttings?

Hi AZFig,
That's the way that most people do it in the old world :) .
In the farms lost in the country, there is/was no light ... so no artificial lighting or heating . Or time to care for - people would call you crazy if you tried to use those cares on whatever the crop.
But, they have/had plenty of land to plant the resulting trees :) .
I'll have to look into buying a piece of Land ... That's urgent ... Fig-wise that is . Or I can thin the herd ...

That's how I started 2 of my in ground tres before I found this forum.......lol

that is the only way that has consistently worked for me. I travel a lot and simply don't have the time to baby fig cuttings in the house. But buried ones are pretty much care free here where I live, except in the middle of the summer when they need a little watering. But if you start them in the spring they should have pretty good roots by the time the dry season comes (July/Aug).

Agree, but I only bury mine with 1/2" of dirt on top.  Still works.  It's natural for them.  However if your climate is not ideal, it will not work.  Drives me nuts all of you with your pots and shuffles, but I do understand.  In an ideal climate outdoor rooting is the best.  If you do the fig shuffle, maybe not.

I buried mine in the garden an inch and a half under the dirt sideways underneath a soaker hose. The water comes on every 6 hours for 30 minutes so its pretty wet there. they started popping leaves through the dirt in about a month, almost all of them so far.I did this with some of my cuttings that started rotting, I cut off the rotted ends first.I was very surprised at how easy this is. No more mumbo jumbo for me, you know with the cups and all. Seems to be the fail proof, easiest way to start a fig tree.

I killed a bunch of cuttings I  would have cut at least a node off and tried this also .
