one thing I learned this year was that the cuttings once in potting mix, when using a heat mat, watering has to be done a lot more often There is not much danger of cuttings rotting, since the heat mat evaporates the water from the soil mix.  Drying out is the bigger problem, more than normal share of cuttings were killed by drying out this year.

I just put it near the warmest place in your room like vent. You have to put dome to keep the moisture. 

i was thinking of getting a heat matt for more consistant temp for rooting as my house is chilly in winter .

Other years that is what I have done.
this year my wife said no figs in the living area.
so had to rig something in the basement.
lights and heat mat for a dark and cold area.

I do not expect it will have figs indoor but root cuttings.

 i bought some root riot cubes and clonex . I found  some nice domes for $3.99 at Manards .

I use heat mats. Right now I've set up two domes with lights and heat mats and root riot, etc. We'll see but Rafed's having great success using root riot cubes.

I've had problems in the past with heat mats being too warm, even in cooler basement areas. Dirt drying out too fast. Seedlings getting cooked (more like steamed). So last year I made the plunge for a heat mat thermostat. Great move! I can crank things up in Jan. and Feb., and turn it down in the spring when starting seeds for fall crops. Having control over temps is very important. Some plants like 70* - some more towards 80*. Either way, a great investment ........

I use a heat mat both for rooting dormant cuttings and in another bin for the cuttings that have been
transferred to cups.  In both cases I use a plastic grill work to give a little separation between heat pad and cuttings.  The use of a thermostat also gives you some control over the process.  I have found better results with the heat mat than without.

I only will use heating mats to root, I use a 9 inch dome to root them, vents are wide open on them so that the moisture can escape,  I just use pro mix mx and I find i have to add perlite to it now so that they don't stay too wet for me.

I use a heating mat with temperature controller in a rather large Sterlite container with lid to start my cuttings.  Temperature is 74-75F.  My heating mat is a plastic film with heating elements sandwiched between the plastic layers.  It can be found at home brew stores and is typically used to keep 5 gallon glass carboys at a preset temperature for fermentation.
