Sticky Gnat-Light Trap Experiment

Ok it's not too pretty but here goes another experiment, the Sticky Gnat-Light.  A cardboard roll with two sides cut out and wrapped with sticky fly paper roll.  Set over a LED flashlight and a piece of foil on the top to reflect the light back down into it. Fairly bright with the light off.

I am getting some gnats on the sticky rolls hanging in the bright room and read the gnats are attracted to light.  I see a few here and there while watering.  Let's see how this goes.

Not sure how the light from this may affect cutting growth.  Anybody have thoughts on that?

Ha!  The first unsuspecting victim went into the light...

Put candles ;)

Good luck, I hope the light works.
Somewhat off topic, but along the same line. I am going to get a small bug zapper to hang by my remaining blackberry next summer. When I am out checking things out and watering late at night like I do, the SWD often fly in my face to get to the headlamp. I'm hoping it will be another weapon in the arsenal to help get some berries again. It's supposed to be more quiet than the old school zappers.

Not off topic Calvin.  I love bug zappers lol.

Hey they stole my idea lol

I'm not so sure it's all that good of an idea.  That one gnat in the first hour was all.  Left it on all night and no more victims.

The one I have that seems to work the best is orange... I will post a picture

For what it's worth, I didn't have trouble with gnats at all last year (when starting cuttings) since I switched to a dry potting medium (promix bx) and away from miracle gro and other mixes that seem to come pre-dampened. Spider mites were a problem but only (I think) because I brought some already-growing potted plants and set them beside the figs. Not saying that's your problem, just sharing what worked for me (prevention versus curing the problem).

Wow Gloria they really seem to like that.  I don't really have a bunch of gnats and the sticky rolls seem to be getting them.  If it gets bad I will try those.

LOL, I've had that one since last winter. I haven't had a problem this  year knock on wood (taps side of head) I put nematodes in my soil and neem oil on the plants at the first sign...
