Storing Baby Fig Trees in Plastic Tub for Winter?

I recently got some fig tree cuttings to root (by wrapping them in wet newspaper for weeks), so I planted them into some small containers. I'm in Zone 9 (Sacramento, CA).  The pots have been outside for a couple of days until I figure out what to do with them next. Temperatures last night reached slightly below 30 degrees, so I'm starting to get worried. I do not have a garage to store the little trees in, which are only inches tall. I don't think it's going to get much colder than mid-20s.

I am wondering if it would be safe to store them in a large opaque plastic storage tub outside during the winter, and could I wrap them in bundles of newspaper and paper bags for insulation?

If this is not a wise option, what about bringing them inside? And: If I tricked my little trees into thinking it isn't winter, how would that pan out when spring actually came and I took them outside?

[This is just an experiment. If they don't survive, oh well.]

Thanks for reading.

Welcome.

Bring them in....make sure they get light.  It won't matter that they didn't get a winter.  Leaving them outside at the stage they are now in that cold is asking for rot.

Bring them in.  They are too young to know about seasons.  For all intents and purposes, they think it is spring now.  If you leave them in temps that cold, they most likely wont survive.

bmel37,
Welcome to the Forum, you will find the answers to most, if not all your fig questions here.  I agree that the seedlings should be brought inside for the colder months.  They are real small and very fragile at this stage(think incubation suite at the hospital nursery.)  Probably a clear container with a clear lid might be a better choice than the solid grey that you showed.  This will allow some filtered light to get to the little infants.   Good luck with your fig growing adventures.

Welcome!
those are some nice roots there. i would bring them inside and place them near a south facing window.
they will thank you for it.......

I have mine on a heating pad, next to full spectrum lights. I mist the leaves throughout the day so they don't try out.

Stevin, your window is magic! nice little ones you have!

Hank, but I read that misting the leaves kill them... yours do ok?

In humid climates we worry about wetting the leaves because there are rust spores all over the place.

Bmel37,

Welcome to the forum. I would treat them just like rooted cuttings. Pot them in a light cutting potting mix, and grow them in a window or under lights like an indoor house plant. I use a 70/30 or 80/20 mix of Perlite/Miracle Grow seed starting mix (the MG seed starting mix is sterilized, less chance of fly eggs and fungus). If the potting mix stays too wet the roots will rot.

Note attached rooting instructions for further info.

I mist mine in my fridged zone 6 location, i only have to mist them after i take the cup that i have on top for a humidity dome off (after good roots)  if i dont mist the new leaves wilt away. after about 2 weeks i dont have to mist any more. i water from the bottem too in 10/20 flats. no problems thus far knock on wood.

I appreciate all of the responses. I have taken the cuttings inside at night and back out during the day to get some light.
