Storing Cuttings in Fridge

Ok I have a quick question I have some relatives coming to visit in Feb. and they wanted to take some Cuttings back with them the problem is that the person who is giving me the cuttings will be cutting them in the next two weeks and I will have to store them until Feb. would they still be viable if stored in the fridge for that long? & how would I store them.

Thank you

Nelson.

I just received a bunch of cuttings!

I cleaned them with Dawn soap, then 10% Clorox

and rinsed, then wrapped them in damp paper towels, then into sealed baggies into the veggie crisper in the fridge, I will try to root them on the middle of Feb.

Thank you Cecil thats exactly the kind of answer I was looking for so they will last 4 months in the fridge eh. Cool had no idea I dont ever want to start summer cuttings again personally too much work afterwords.

Thanks again Cecil

Nelson,I have heard a few members say they can be kept in the fridge for over a year!

Jesus, had I known I would of waited until feb to start the last cuttings I got. This is another good question for the FAQ section.

I have a friend who stored his cuttings for 5 months in the fridge. You just got to make certain the cuttings don't dry out by checking the paper towels used in wrapping them. His cuttings rooted well & he gave me the extras.

This is great I love figs even more now woohoo.

One Hobby Farm coming up.....HAHA

Oh Cecil you read my mind, Ideally would be to move to a warmer climate all together. Cecil how often do you check on your cuttings that are in the fridge?

If I see condensation in the baggie about the only thing I do is about once a month open the baggie and let it get fresh air, if it needs some moisture I just spray the paper towel with a spray bottle, just a little not soppin wet!

Others with a lot more experience may not do it this way?
feel free to chime in on this matter!!!

Cecil, you forgot to add Canada will have "Adriano No 2" -- Lol.

When you say you clean them with 10% clorox, is that 1 part bleach to 9 parts water or does it mean somthing else?

Yes Lisa,

I part bleach, 9 parts water.

Hi Paully

I knew I was forgetting something!

Thanks ;-)

hahaha you guys are too much, I have told myself no more plants until I get my own house. It hasn't really worked so far but I think I have enough to play with for a while. Anyone ever hear of Montserrat Pons from Mallorca Spain? They call him the fig guru he has a serrious collection 1287 fig trees in 15 hectars of land 367 varieties in total now thats a collection.

What is the minimum amount of time they need to stay in the fridge before rooting?  We have a minimal dormant period and would like to know when I can try to root them.  I would go ahead and try to start them now (they arrived in the mail today), but I am out of town next week and cannot watch them.

Lisa,

I have kept them as little as a week in the fridge, some never puts them in the Fridge!

I could be wrong, but I think I have heard Jon say he never puts them in the Fridge!

Hey Nelson
where about in Toronto do you live
I would love to see your figs Maybe trade some cuttings
I would like to get some cuttings of your Portuguese variety's
I'm in Hamilton area

Hey Nelson i don't know about Toronto other than the Hockey Team my fav sport over all others but here i can store cuttings in garage practically 6 months out of the year.
My plants always sleep very well during those months and come spring are well rested .

Lisa,  One week in the crisper is adequate.  I have done this several times now.  They all seem to take off reasonably well when I start them in potting mix on a warming tray.
John.

Thanks for the information.   The cuttings arrived this week and ordinarily I would just try to get them rooted but I am out of town next week and my husband is not reliable enough to watch the cuttings.  If I am lucky he will manage to water the tomatoes while I am gone.  He is happy with just grass (and not even nice grass) in the yard.

I wasn't sure once they went into the fridge, if they had to stay there for a certain length of time and didn't want to chance then not surviving.   I don't think I will need a warming tray since we are still going into the 90's during the day and not getting all that cool at night.
