So I recently bought some cuttings and wanted to store them in the fridge. So I cleaned them with light bleach and water mixture like I always do. I waited until they dried and put them in the fridge in a ziplock. 2 hours later they had moisture in the bag. Is it normal to get condensation in the bag? Or should I be drying these cuttings for 24 hours?
It is very normal to have moisture collect in the bag. That is why you never want to keep wet paper of any sort around your refridgerated cuttings.I keep my cuttings in the crisper of my fridge. I remove the cuttings about once per month to check on them and dry them and the baggie out. Then I place them back in the fridge.
For optimum storage, bleach, rinse, dry out, parafilm and shrink wrap.2nd best, the first three, then saran wrap in a ziplock.I don't allow my cuttings unprotected in a ziplock for more thana hot second.
I actually plan on vacuum sealing them but ran out of bags. I was just curious as to how people store them in fridge and figured people were using ziplock bags. Why doesn't condensation occur with saran wrap?
I've been putting in a handful or two of bone dry coco coir in the ziploc bags when I put cuttings in the fridge. The coco coir acts as a desiccant and absorbs excess moisture. This is the first year I've tried this but it seems to be working out ok so far.I've had them in there for a few weeks and no moisture and they still look good.
<Why doesn't condensation occur with saran wrap?>Unless you vacuum seal you'll have condensation.Saran wrapis a moisture barrier.Wrap the saran sealed cuttings in newsprint(remember that stuff?<G>)to catch moisture prior to placing in the zip lock.Change the newsprint if needed. There's many ways of doing this, the importantthing is not to expose the scion to external moisture or desiccation.
Thanks Tyro, I finally found a single roll of 11' custom length cut Foodsaver bags. I went Gainder Mountain and they were only selling 8 packs for 60$. I went to Walmart and found them. 10$ and change for single rolls.
Sal: i am also thinking of using my Foodsaver for storring cuttings but i read a post about hacks for using regular bags with it...i'll have to find out about this. Im not sure its possible.
