Storing potted fig in garage over winter

looking for your suggestion on the following:

so as we get closer in NYC (Queens area) to the grow season ending .. I start to think about storing my potted figs.

I have an detached garage, I usually put up a 4 x 8 grow tent with 2, 4 foot Hydrofarm T-5 lighting.

the grow tend usually stays in the 60 to 70 degree range when the lighting is on (about 8-10 hours a day)

on the cold days it will dip to 40 or so without the lighting on.

the question being, should I put the potted figs inside this grow tent? should I not and leave them inside the garage so they can go into their dormant stage?

should I cover or wrap the figs to ensure they go dormant? if I wrap them should I put inside the tent or outside the tent?

just wondering what everyone else is doing with their potted figs in the queens area. this is the first year I started my "fig collection" and I want to make sure they make it to next spring in good shape.

Hi Charlie.
I live in Saratoga NY zone 4, I put all my figs in my garage, and keep the temperature at 40-45 and give them a little water in the middle of winter and I have been successfull.
Good luck.
Vito

thank you vito, do you cover them or just leave them as is in the pots.. i have read that people put the pots onto Styrafom  to keep it off the cold ground

I'm also thinking about the winter and have a detached garage. Using lighting like that wouldn't allow the plants do go dormant but for heat it would work. Ive been pricing temperature contollers. I think a few old incandescent bulbs could provide the heat needed. I know it's only august but I'm on the same page as you.

thank you sal, this was the first year of my "collection figs" years past was the old Italian figs in the ground and the annual fig covering with my dad and the kids.. last few years all die back.. then I discovered Figs4fun and now my  yard is filled with potted figs that I really want to get through the winter.. question will you cover your potted figs in the garage or just leave them as is and have them go dormant?

I leave mine uncovered.

Hi charlie,
I have been storing my figs in my garage for many years now. I am in zone 5
and my garage is attached. I never cover my figs but in the last few years I purchased a heater on Craig's list for 45 dollars. To date i have never lost a fig while storing them in my garage. I do water just a bit come mid winter and keep that heater set at as low as I can so as to not have it come on until temps drop well below freezing.
My system works really great for me. Old photo of my set up.
