Strawberry Fig - first ripe fig of 2013

Good day!  I am happy as I can be!  This year, I started testing my knowlege about figs.  Here is one of  my unknown green fig that I pick this morning at 7AM!  HA, I got to it before the catbirds and mockingbirds did!  HA HA HA!  Well, I cheated a tad bit.  This tree is in a 3 gallon pot.  I moved it near my garage door.  For months, I called this fig unknown because my main label faded away.  I called this fig Strawberry before knowing the truth.  Last year I started double labeling my container trees.  One big white 3 inch label marked with a sharpie and another 2 inch label marked with a pencil.  The label marked with a sharpie faded away.  I buried small label into the soil.  After digging around the side of the pot, I found the label---Strawberry!  I was right!  Sometimes it pays to have a backup!

I did not take a picture of the leaf pattern because the tree has both 3 and 1 lobes.  I knew it's wasn't  Verte or JH Adraitic.  Both V and JH-A are a tad bit smaller and dark red inside.  I have V and JH-A growing in my orchard.  This fig looks nothing like those.  It is a breba.  It was sweet but not very sweet.  The mother tree has figs on but no brebas.  The past 3 months, I test my knowledge what this fig could be knowing the backup tag was inside.  I knew it was Strawberry by the way it grew, taste, and leaf pattern.

I winterize it inside my garage and this Spring, it just kept growing and growing.  In the past my mother tree had figs that were more round and a little larger.  This one is a little long but again it's a breba.  This tree is a keeper!  I was going to give this tree away but changed my mind after tasting this bad boy!  I'm going to pot it up in a 15 gallon superoot pot tonight and winterize in inside my garage this winter.  Thanks for watching every one!  Have a good fig year!

Congrats Dennis.

Looks great!  Hope you get many more.  How would you compare it to JH Adriatic and Strawberry Verte? (Tastewise)

Good day Bob! JH Adriatic has a strong sweet berry taste.  I have not tasted SV yet.  Jon rant and raves about how good it is.  So last year he sent me one.  Now, I got these figs growing side by side:

Adraitic BR
JH Adriatic
Strawberry Verte JV
Green Ischia PFTP

I'm looking forward to one great fig taste test!  Heck I like JH-A so much that I got 4 back ups!  If you don't have at JH-A.....by all means get one!

I also have 4 JH Adriatic, only 2 are 5 years old the other 2 are small plants I made from cuttings ,of the older plants.
Yes it deserves to have more than one because my climate can kill some of them, and also if they live to produce they are delicious,so any way it goes it is a win situation.

I have both JH Adriatic and Strawberry Verte. They both produced very limited fruit in their first year. I thought both extremely good, even at such a young age. I would say 'exceptional', but I haven't tasted that many varieties of figs yet to be able to compare. :)

Good day Dennis and the rest of us!  What I meant is how does the flavor of your strawberry compare to the flavor of JH Adriatic and Jon's Strawberry Verte?  Might as well add in Bataglia Green to the comparison list.  I'm hoping to get my first ripe JH A and Bataglia Green this year.  I don't have any of the strawberries because I've heard they're all similar to each other, JH A and Bataglia Green.  For those of you that have any or all of these growing, do you think they're similar in taste, productivity and timing of ripe figs?

Thanks.

Dennis,
I have Adriatic ,it was sent to me as a small plant a few years ago and it is also free of the fig virus, and yes is a great tasting fig
great flavor .Ciao,
Giuseppe
