Strawberry Verte Brebas

I have about 9 brebas on my Strawberry Verte.  They are medium sized but hard.   Last year, they continued to be hard and never ripened before falling off the tree.  I didn't get any main crop figs last year, but the tree was still a bit young.    I repotted in a bigger pot since last year and the tree is much larger, and main crop figs are starting to form.   I'm near Phoenix and it's in the mid to upper 90 degrees these days and only getting hotter.

My question: has anyone ever gotten a good breba from a Strawberry Verte?  I want to know if I should wait or just chuck them.

I do not know about it, I would say save maybe 2 of the best ones and take off the rest to see how they do.

They formed in 2009 for me. Do not know what happened to them.

Fignatic,

Here is a thread that may interest you (particularly after post #37):

Thanks.  I looked at the post.  It looks like Condit's description says the brebas on this tree are fake figs because when mature, they still are unripe for eating.   Sounds exactly like my figs.  It also says they hold onto figs over the winter which also is what mine does.  However, someone did get a nice tasty looking breba there.   I'm inclined to toss most of them, but now I'm not sure where the new growth started because I think some of the new growth already turned brown and some of these figs are at its base where either the new growth meets the old growth or it is on the new growth and the branch is already brown.

I think you misunderstood the part about "appearing unripe even when mature". He was referring to the fact that the ripe figs are very green when mature, not that they are inedible.

Finally, first fig from Strawberry Verte.   Could have waited a day or two more, but still tasted pretty good.

your pic did not post

Yes, I was trying to post it, but it didn't work.  I did a "permalink" from Shutterfly.   Trying to look for directions on easiest way to post a picture, but can't find any.  If you know, please tell me.

Have you tried the "go advanced" button and uploading the pictures directly from your PC?

Thank you.   Mystery solved.

This is my Strawberry Verte breba.  First fig ever from this tree.   Planted in pot about 2 years ago near Phoenix, AZ.   Stressed the tree out by inadvertently over watering from a drip.  I guess that's why the figs ripened.   Problem is I got a bunch of yellow leaves though.   I set it to water my pots twice a day for about 15 minutes.  I think the afternoon watering did them in because the water at the time must be at least 110 degrees.

That's a lot of watering. I'm watering my potted ones every other day for 20 minutes. Sounds like yours may be overwatered and the nutrients possibly leached out. I water in the late afternoon and have the poly tubing running under suspended EMT conduit tubing to keep from dripping very hot water. I think if you wait until the fruit is very ripe you will prefer the flavor and sweetness. Good luck!

Yes, I cut way back on the watering to one time a day for 15 minutes around 4:40am.   The drip doesn't put out a lot of water.

I actually had it watering every 6 hours for 15 minutes each time at first.  I was away and afraid the 100+ degree temps would dry it out too much.  The figs in the smaller half gallon/gallon size containers are fine.  The ones in the big planters are the ones with yellowing leaves now falling off.   Exactly, like you said, nutrients leaching out + chlorosis.   I just added some compost to the pots today and a bit of coffee grounds.  I hope it helps.    Couldn't wait to try the fig today because I will be traveling and didn't want to miss it as I've been anticipating eating this one fig for months.
