Strawberry Verte vs. Calvert

I was looking over a fig cuttings order I have coming from UCD and it includes DFIC 77 - Calvert.  If you look at the description, it says the Calvert is a/k/a "Verte" and "Ischia Green" (among others).  I thought the Strawberry Verte was the same as an Ischia Green, but if I look at DFIC 395 - Strawberry Verte, it appears it's a different fig entirely.

Does anyone have these two varieties?  How similar are they?

The Strawberry Verte is much more vigorous and productive.

I thought the same thing, but I also thought the Green Ischia was the same as the strawberry verte and, it appears from the listing, it's the same as the verte, and NOT the strawberry verte.

I have Calvert growing thank you to a generous forum member.  And I have to agree with Jon on this one.  While all the others I have are doing well, this one didn't grow hardly at all since I received it.  Hopefully next year will be better.

I have Verte (the strain that comes from Bass).  I don't have Calvert or Strawberry Verte producing figs yet, and my Ischia Green is too young to produce fruit.  So I can't do any direct comparison to help.  But my Verte this year doesn't resemble the descriptions of Ischia Green at all... not even close.  Though it's not a direct side-by-side comparison, it's hard to believe that this Verte is the same as Ischia Green (based on fairly consistent descriptions of Ischia Green).

Description plus photos of my Verte from this year can been seen here:

Tam, do you have a bot that just posts "Thanks for sharing" all the time?

My Calvert from USDA grew very well in first year and have figs on them now.   Strawberry Verte was better than ever this year.  Last few years not good at all.   Didn't know they were so similar.

bump on an old thread...

So has the question been answered regarding Strawberry Verte vs. Verte vs. Ischia Green vs. Calvert?  Since Michael Tucson has all four growing, I would think he'd be able to provide some illumination on this.

I'm in the process of acquiring a Strawberry Verte, does anyone know how cold hardy it is and it's ripening time?

EDIT:

  • hardy to zone 7
  • early ripening (late July/Early August for zone 7)
I've ready once it ripens, it keeps kicking out fruit until frost.  Is this true?  If so, that's wonderful.

Thanks.

god.. that Calvert looks worse then mine. at least mine has good number of figs on it. but for whatever reason, it's "creeping" on the ground.

Could someone tell me if Emerald Strawberry 143-36,  the same as Strawberry from Richard Watts?

Thank you

Hi! Michael,

I had one potted Strawberry Verte, but it passed away last winter 2013-2014. Thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam
