Stripped Tiger Ripened

After waiting for months, one finally ripened. The first one
of 8 on the tree. They are yellow with green stripes. Red eye
and red flesh and very good tasting. Tasting so good was a surprise. It could have waited another day but we've had rain for part of the last 2 days and I didn't want to take a chance of it splitting.

This is a keeper for me and I wish all of you that have one
good luck.

Peg, doesn't feel good knowing you've babied your tree for months and then finally, the day comes when it's time to pick that one fig?  Good job!   I have a striped tiger fig and had to relocated it to the shade.  Here in the Carolinas we've almost set a record for the most consecutives days above 90 degree and no rain!  I'm watering some trees twice a day!  My Striped tiger is doing better now.  It is a keeper.

Dennis,
The same weather here all summer. We did set a record for July.
Starting the first week of Sept. we've had a big change. Cool
mornings, in the lower 50's and some days had a high of 69. But today
its getting warmer again, 78* today. I hope the warmer weather stays
with us because there are lots of figs waiting to ripen.

I'm thrilled that Tiger tasted so good as well as a pretty addition to any
collection.

I am surprised that you got it to ripen. Perhaps your excessively hot summer has paid off. Congrats.

Jon,
Thanks, I never though it would happen, LOL. Yesterday they
were all just as hard as rocks as they have been for months.
I just wonder if it was the cooler nights the past week and
some rain. Whatever it was, I was overjoyed, and wish every
one gets a chance to try them since they are so pretty. Something different in the way of color.

Way to go Peg.
It does not surprise me if your growing the fig plants in pots.
Getting them to taste good in the cooler climates is another thing though.
I had one Panache fig first appear near July 4th and was close to ripening but developed dark spot that turned mushy the others were knocked off on this first season plant.

What i believe and soon to find out

The key is to getting longer season climate type figs to ripen in our climate and "container grown" is to get the plants to awake early as possible by bringing them out early when temps allow and back in at night when temps are much to cold thereby putting on fig eymbryo's as early as possible.
This i have been doing since day 1 growing figs and seems to help me with my plants here in my climate even if by only several weeks .
Then the waiting game , if one gets these types figs to come onto tree early enough in season they will ripen before season ends here.
But will they taste up to ones standard is another thing im trying to find out with several like my Panache , Madeira and Preto.
I try at least to see and if things dont work out then at least i tried for myself and solved my curiosity.
Thanks for posting about your experience i your area.
