Sucrette (Baud)

This was the first fig off of this 2nd year tree growing in a 5 gallon container.  I was going to let it ripen another day or two but when I came home after work it was laying on the ground in its organza bag.  It wasn't damaged so perhaps the wind knocked it off? Anyway, the flavor was mild and not particularly sweet like I had been expecting.  The skin was more thick and chewy than average and it had a good seed crunch.  However, it had a very pleasant creamy flavor.  I can definitely see the potential of this one but am hoping for better as it matures (and ripens more thoroughly).

Yeah, Micky Mantle probably struck out early in his career, too  :)

Here is what Axier's looked like.  I don't think he has the wasp and his clearly had red pulp.  So yeah Bob, I don't think it was anywhere near ripe.

Hello,

I think yours is Sucre Verte , I have that aswell . Sucrette is more like red interior I believe .

Thanks

Looks good . at this time of the year all figs are welcome.

My Niagara black is ripening easily though.

Vinny, it came from one of the most respected sources in Europe who got it from Baud. The shade of pulp color can be affected by various factors. Then again, it is hard to be sure about anything in figs.    Could you post the fruit and leaves from your Sucre Verte?

I should also mention that after this initial post I have had about 15 figs off of my Sucrette and it was one of the most tasty figs I had this year.

hi,

I got my sucre verte from reads nursery and this is what they say about the variety,

Fig Tree - Sucre Vert.

Syn. Green Sugar - Honey - Queen.

A medium size fruit with light green skin, round in shape . The Flesh is a clear honey colour with a pink to red flush and very sweet.

The tree is an average size- not too large with carefull pruning, it will need a warm sunny spot on a wall to ripen well or, keep it in the greenhouse further north. Ideal for pot culture where the tree can be moved around.

This is what Baud has to say about Sucre Vert

Late, in September. Nice sized fruit (about 60 g), very clear-fleshed honey.

Sucrette

Sucrette

This French variety has a yellowish green outside and a red interior. It is very sweet and Mari says it has hints of banana.

It is a very vigorous grower and produces many figs. It grows great in containers

But I'm no expert as you know I just got my sucrette from Baud. I got information about this variety from thr forum and online. Sucrette is described as a dark red fleshed fig everywhere, I think the fact that there are two varities with similar name add confusion. Does your late fig had dark pulp ? I still got figs hanging on my sucre vert, will post pics if they ripen. Anyway I'm going to email Baud and will PM you once I get the reply.

Thanks

How about my unknown fig from France

Anyone know what cultivar is this?

Ripen fig was very sweet, with a seal of honey drop in the eye.
Picture of ripen fig and leafs are in the post above...

Hello from France.

It Seems you guys are having problems with sucrette and sucre vert. I have them both and they come from the Baud nursery.
Sucrette (translation: "sugarette"):
On pictures 2 an 3 the smaller one is sucrette (the bigger one is Cavaliere)

Feuilles sucrette.jpg Cavaliere et sucrette.jpg  Cavaliere et sucrette 1.jpg

Then Sucre vert (green sugar) also called Mussega:

I was surprised to read this post because I saw pierre Baud 2 days ago and we talked about this. He has the original Sucre vert and Sucrette, both are coming from " Conservatoire botanique national méditerranéen
de Porquerolles
and are really delicious figs. But here, many generalist nurseries are selling sucre vert and sucrette but they are not the real ones like, it seams,  the Reads nursery . Compare the leaves of Sucre vert from Baud and from Reads. . . . .
Reads sucrette seams OK although their fig is a little bit longer than mine.
Well I hope this will help .

Marc

Thanks for weighing in, Marc.  I'll try to post my leaves tonight.  The leaves on my Sucrette are reminescent of Atreano leaves (though it is clear that my tree is not Atreano) and the leaves don't look very much like either variety you show.  The fruit, on the other hand, looks very similar.  I need to discuss this with my source...

Hello again

Sorry late answer; I was actually planting two fig trees ( panachée and Chettoui)
Sucre vert is a  pretty  big fruit much bigger than sucrette and late in the season (around the 15th of august here, well this year the fig season started on the 20th of july). Pierre Baud says that sucre vert is almost too sweet; I think it's delicious but not as tasty as Trojano for exemple (you should try this one) . I quickly looked  at the Reads site and they are wrong on Pastilliere which has 3 lobes thick velvety leaves, ronde de Bordeaux doesn't look like the picture, and dorée has different leaves. (i can show pic if you want).
By the way if you are in England you should try the "blanche" from Baud, which is very cold resistant and  has delicious fruits probably as good as St. Jean for the brebas. You can even plant it in your garden.
You'll find Trojano and blanche on the Baud disponible: http://www.fig-baud.com/notredisponible.html

Hello,

I see what you mean by pictures. I don't think reads pictures are very accurate, as English people have very little or no knowledge when it comes to fig trees and don't really care about leaves also reads offers fig trees at very low price for enthusiasts. My friend have a rouge de Bourdeaux from reads and fruits looks like rouge de Bourdeaux . Then again I can't really argue about the quality or authenticity of the varieties with baud. I will try those varieties you recommend , I didn't know that I could order from that disponible list, I just ordered from his catalogue for figs. Thanks a lot for your advise . Do you think brusset nursery ship to uk ?

Vinny

According to my own experience Pierre Baud is the most serious and accurate fig expert in France. I have tried other "specialized nurseries" and they were big disapointment. And he is a very nice man .I dont know the brusset nursery.
You say that English people have little knowledge when it comes to fig trees, well it's the same here, and I live in the south of France which is fig heaven, they grow everywhere but people know only black and green figs and that's about it!
Of course you can order from that disponible list; and even ask him for rareties. In your wish list, I have not tried the 2 LSU, violette de B must be negronne which is a very good one, Ischia black is very very similar to negronne, Preto means black in potuguese so I guess you mean Sao Joao Preto (pierre Baud had one prepared for me so I guess you can ask him one for next year), I got one black madeira also and I think he might have one left,I don't know Atreano but I got from him, Adreano (the same?) and I don't know the two reds.
The two problems when you live in the "north" are the short summers and the fact that you don't have the fig wasp so you must avoid san pedro types and late ripening trees. But you can have fun with the brebas of dauphine, Macca, colar, breba, nazareth etc . . .And you must avoid Shenshare, Hava, Shamé, etc. . .
Mary Lane is very nice, Portugal 80 is a dwarf tree as Alma although it's late in the season. If you don't have Dalmatie, get it it's a must have for cool weather , try also Tena, and longue d'aout.
You can also check Adriano's site, that way you'll know which ones work fine in pots : http://www.adrianosfigtrees.com/varieties.html
Well I guess it's about it.

Yes it's better if you do that, because you have nice pics it's better to put your name in it.

OK then.

Two pics of Chettoui from Algeria;  I planted the tree today.
