Suggestion for an Annual Wish-List of Cuttings

Kerry had once suggested to start a new thread on this subject but I wrongly suggested that that new one will cause confusion so it is better to continue with the old one. He gently accepted my argument but now I feel I was wrong for a number of reasons. The main reasons are that the thread is getting too long and also very few may update their list when they receive cuttings shown in their wish-list. I happened to have cuttings in someone's wish-list whom I contacted but they thanked and said they have already received from other source.

I suggest an annual wish list such as "Six Cuttings on Wish-List - 2012-13", or "2012-13 Wish-List of Six Cuttings" should be started before the fall of each year preferably started in June or May every year. By that time old stocks will be almost depleted and it will also give opportunity to some who wish to start air-layering for someone's Wish-List.

If there is interest in such an annual thread, then since Paul initiated the original WishList thread, I would sugget that Paul starts the new thread for the year 2012-13 (June 2012 to June 2013; or May instead of June).

Yes, having the year on the thread would be very helpful!  It does get hard weeding through all the posts!  Good idea!

Annual thread for a "Wish List" would be much better and updated through all the figsters.

Sounds like a good idea.

I agree. A time tag will be helpful.

Are we limited to six variants only?

Yeah because Rafed can never have enough! LOL

Dom,

I agree with your comment.
Never enough. LOL

I think six is just a guideline. Some will put down fewer without getting into trouble, and I seriously doubt you'll get banned if you put down 20. :)

I do know however that if lists are too long, or too complicated, I stop reading.

Great idea by the way.

I don't even remember what I wished for from UC Davis, but I know what I didn't order from them (they don't have it all), and my list is on my signature.  I need to remove Sals, because a generous member is sending me that one!

Suzi

great idea.
akram - as usual you are always very kind and considerate to others. I have yet to understand what difference does it make whom will starts the thread?

It only matters if the original thread poster gets offended.  I doubt he will be, and I think happiness will rule!  When you are right!  Absolutely!  Akram simply does not want to offend the original poster, and admitted he wasn't thinking straight!  He came to Jesus, saw the error of his ways, and retracted!  Takes a big man to do that!

Suzi

why not have only one post per member in the wish list thread? this way they can keep updating it if there is a need.

pete

i was not talking so much about this ongoing example which i am sure paul (or kerry) wont mind at all .... but rather on many other instances where members are hesitant to post their own pictures on someone else's thread. i thought the whole point was to share, help and learn from each other for the benefit of all members and non members

Pete (bullet), yes only one post per member in the wish list thread with updates as required will keep the thread efficient.

Gina point is valid that 6 cutting is a guideline only but a bigger list just becomes a fantasy.

Eli and Suzi, you are both kind.

Eli, people do post their fig pictures on other people posts when there is some relevance to the thread. for information sharing as you mentioned.

Definately a good idea to start a new thread. It is getting too long.

I had typed a suggestion for this post a few days ago, but we had a storm which knocked out the internet before I could post it.

Rather than have members post their "wish list", perhaps we should have a post pinned to the top with member's available cuttings/trees.  The posters will be motivated to remove their post once the offerings have been distributed (keeping the post clean and easy to navigate.  Also, it puts the onus on the seeker to navigate the posts to find what they are looking for.

As for wish list, I like the idea of it being spelled out in the signature line.

I was reading the current, new wish list, and have been intrigued by how many figs people are wanting that I've never even heard of.

As to asking for, trading, or giving cuttings/plants, I expect that will go on as it probably has for years - in as many ways as there are forum members. :)

James
- In many cases people go out of their way to accommodate other members wishlist even if they were not planning to prune (which would have meant cuttings available).
- Members still do create threads when they have cuttings available when pruning their trees and as Gina said such trade will go on in different in various forms.
- Spelling out wishlist in Signature line is another way. However, its repetition in every post in every thread is kind of overdoing it and would clutter threads when everyone starts doing it this way and short messages will get drowned in the wishlists repeated again and again in the signature line.

Just my thinking...
