suggestion on planting bare root fig plant?

Hi, someone is sending me a bare root 2 year old fig plant that is dormant. I am in NY so temps still very cold for a few more weeks. Wondering if experienced fig growers can suggest how I should pot this up for best chance of success?  What type of growing medium as i will keep this in a pot? thanks and this forum is great for us new growers and really appreciate all the good advice.

Barry,

Somebody sent me a potter plant (with some soil) 10 days ago from the Northern California (to the Southern California).
It came in a poor condition because it got frozen on the plane… The leaves fell off in 2 days and the roots are soft like spaghetti.

If the sender (and you) can wait until the warmer days, I suggest you do. California is not a frozen land, you know.

For me planting bare root trees would be similar as up-potting a fig tree.
Look at the roots and trim if necessary and use a pot that is slightly larger than the spread roots.  Use a porous soil mix pre-moisten and hold off on watering until it breaks dormancy.

If the tree is already bare-rooted, wrap the roots in damp paper towels (squeeze out as much water as possible) the wrap in foil. Make sure all of the paper is within the foil. I stored for about a month and the paper stayed moist. I'd check sooner to be certain.

The air 30,000 feet high is well below freezing year round.  I'd be surprised if it really froze on the plane though, I thought they kept interior cargo spaces above freezing.
