Suggestions Please

I have a couple of rooted cuttings in moss that I have promised and I wanted to send them out this week -priority mail box . They will be going to a cold climate and I needed suggestions as to how to wrap in box so the roots are not damaged . Thanks

pattee,

all the rooted cuttings came to me in a ziplock bag with moist paper towel around the roots. but the weather was above freezing here.

i'm not sure what will happen if the weather drops and the cuttings freeze over during the transit. i would imagine it will freeze then thaw and increase the chance of rot and mold once moved inside. maybe no moisture or very little that is already on the cuttings? and insulation so the cuttings won't freeze?

I would wrap the bagged cutting in a lot of small bubble wrap, or even an old t-shirt.  Should help a little.

I've not tried this yet but I have heard of people using 72 hr heat packs to keep things somewhat warm during cold weather shipping.

Oh great ideas ! Thanks. I do have bubble wrap -still unpacking boxes-  :(    and I also have hand warmers !! I'll have to see how long hand warmers last . Hopefully with those and even a kitchen towel wrapped around , they won't feel the cold.

hand warmers might get too hot for that small of a box and cook the cuttings. you could try a larger box like the usps shoe box and secure the warmer to the bottem while tapeing the wrapped/bagged cuttings towords the top of the box. i have got citrus trees in this way in cold times. though with the cuttings a hand warmer may be over kill. the air in bubble wrap will insulate and keep them warm enough. i would provide a tracking number to whoever you are sending it two so they could keep a close eye on the mail. thats probly the best way.

Make sure to check with the recipient about the temperatures at his location for the week he is expected to receive and how not to leave them in the mailbox for too long if the temperatures are in deep freeze phase. We had week just ended where temperatures until noon were around -10C to -20C (-4F).

Whenever I expect cutting shipment in the kind of weather we have, I watch for the postal truck. I can do that because I am retired.

Thanks Dave , I hadn't thought about cooking them . I agree bubble wrap would be the way to go. Hopefully they will be ok.
