suicidal tree HELP

My pete's honey is loaded with main crop fruit right now, looking like I might have a ripe one in a week maybe two. While looking at the figs I noticed a vertical crack forming in the trunk. This crack is about four inches long up from the soil line about three inches. Starting to look like a hotdog that cooked to long. Why did this happen? Can it be fixed? Will I lose my crop? If it lives through tilll dormant season should I cut it to the ground and start over? Any advice would be awsome.

If you do have to cut it down, don't dig it up it can still shoot up branches.....Also Pray, Pray, Pray...Good Luck !!!

i thought cracks only appear during the early spring or something.. coming out of winter and too much water and all that.. wrap it with grafting tape or something.. i think i read using those black electric tape, but sticky side out.

Sounds like winter damage. I would quickly start an air layer or two if you want to save that variety because the damage could also have affected the roots. I had one do that, killed the complete tree by summers end.

Bonsai growers use cut paste to heal wounds on trees. Most brands have a hormone component, paired with a sealant. Basically, it keeps out pathogens and stimulates growth. I'd slather some of this along the crack and wrap it with some raffia, which will have a little give as the tree forms a callus. Then, let it do its thing until next spring and unwrap.

Its got two good and strong side shoots comming up from the ground. I think I'm just going to leave it alone for now and chop it durinng dormant season. Give it a fresh start, and me around fifty cuttings or more.
