Summer time clean up

Over the past week, I've received the clean up bug. I cleaned up around my orchard trees and started weeding those growing inside my GH. It's 100 degrees outside and varies from 94 to 97 in the GH. Here are a few figs ripening now, Unknown Spain and Black Mission. The high heat does wonders for figs.

Dennis, I would think you would use the greenhouse more as a season extender or to keep rain off of susceptible figs. Do you have other reasons for not moving them outside? Also, could you share more about your UNK Spanish fig? Have you tried this variety yet?

Mike in Hanover, VA

How do you get the greenhouse cooler than the outside?  Is it air conditioned?

The trees inside this GH are over 5 years old in large pots and were on their last legs. I call them my special education trees. Some are rare like my Unknown Spain trees, some were just root balls that I nursed back to a full size tree. They could go outside but it only gets a few hours of sun a day. I will rotate my late ripening figs inside in a few months.

The GH is hot inside. Once it's hot, it stays hot. I keep it cool by rolling the sides up, 2 vents in the rear, and a full size screen door in the front. I have 2 oscillating fans inside on a thermostat. When it reaches 80 degrees, the fans come on. They turn off automatically.

Hope to see a report on your UNK Spanish fig when it ripens Dennis.

Picture #5.  Violette de Bordeaux?  Trying to see if I've learned anything.

Nice harvest Dennis Looks like you are going to have a ton of figs

Picture 5 is Black Mission. I have this one and a Black Mission NL. BMNL was 8 feet tall years ago. The polar vortex killed it to the ground 2 consecutive years in a row. I kept the rootball warm and placed the tree inside this GH. Today the tree is 6 feet tall but no figs this year.

I'm excited to see your unknown Spanish as well Dennis ;)
