Sun Hardening

So ive got two Celeste that came to me with 1 inch calipers, 36 inches tall and and pretty much bare root but with leaves.

I can not get them to take more than 1 hr of direct sun.  Granted its been 2 weeks since I got them, but they leaves remain tender but are darkening every day.  So far they can only take the outdoors if its under my sugar maple.

How long should it take? Any suggestions on how to move the process along?

Are you keeping the roots cool?  (Shading the pots)?   Also...I break mine in slowly under 50% shade cloth.  With temps in the 100's...it can be a tough transition.

You can try to adjust them about an hour before sunset and slowly increase it , or can try at sunrise for short time all depends on your daily schedule.

It usually takes a few weeks, say maybe 3 weeks? Gradually exposing them more every few days. I put plants under my patio in shade to start and edge them closer to the lawn to acclimate. Some plants are faster than otehrs with figs I'd say 2 to 3 weeks is about the norm

I just now moved about 50 young-'uns into the morning sun. They stay there till maybe noon or later (depending on cloud cover). Then back into the shade for the heat of the day. If I am here, I'll move them back into the later afternoon sun, if not, they wait till morning. Most are ready to stay in full sun I think, but need to be transplanted into gallons first so there will be enough soil to draw moisture from. Hopefully later this week I'll have time for that.

Here are two bins of cuttings still in bands being acclimated to the sun. You can see a bit of sun damage, or perhaps underwatering, or both, on one or two of them in the first bin, but nothing too bad.

That's a Black Ischia in the upper right corner of the second photo. A Black Greek in the lower left and right corners, and center top row of the same photo. A negronne in the very center, and a strawberry verte to the center left.
