I found this mulberry along the highway, it has been ripe for about a week now. This is super early despite a warm winter...I have seen any other ripe mulberries on any other trees in the area. Our mulberries usually are not ripe here in Houston Zone 9a until mid April. Does anyone have mulberry ripening in their area now? I did some air layers and took some cuttings, hopefully this is truly a super early specimen.  

Mine don't even have leaves yet.

Mine (Peruvian, Pakistan, Kokuso, and Shangri La) are just leafing out now in South West Florida!

I started picking my Shangri La  on March 4th weekend. This is in Matagorda Tx about 90 miles SW of Houston. 

I've been eating ripe mulberries for the past few days. No idea what variety. It was labeled "black mulberry" when I bought it from Rohde's Organic Plant Nursery in Garland, Texas a few years ago. I'm in the DFW, Texas area(7b/8a?).

Are mulberries tasty? I have never had any before, they look really good, like blackberries on a tree! What do you guys think, since you have all tried them before?

Justin - Since you pointed it out, I'm been keeping an eye out for mulberries. I have seen a lot of the local native varieties that are ripe, almost everywhere that I have been in the last few days has had ripe berries.

Shangri la and Pakistan are fruiting now in south Louisiana

I'm in Southern Louisiana and I've been finding lots of wild mulberrys fruiting near my work. Not sure of the variety though.

I personally love them! I used to eat them as a child on my way to school, picking them off trees on my way. Better flavor than blackberries and sweeter.  To grow a tree just plant a cutting from a new branch. Keep it moist as they are easy to root.

A mulberry is like a blackberry in appearance only. They are seedless and if you wait for them to ripen they are very sweet. If allowed to grow to a tree you will harvest just a few, trimmed to a bush they are delightful! 

I'm jealous. None of my mulberries are ripe yet here in SoCal. Pakistan, Kokuso, Australian White and Shangri La have lots of immature fruit still. Black Persian and Black Beauty are leafing out, haven't even started.
I was going to get rid of the Black Beauty because, with the climate change, it wasn't getting enough chill hours to produce at all, but decided to move the potted one to the coldest part of the yard and give it another year. I may dig up one of my Black Persians, pot it and try that as well. They are planted on the south side of the house, get some radiant heat from the warm house in the winter. That's not helping with the chill factor. A different location might help. 

I warm winter years, I have picked Pakistan as early as January, but usually in the later Spring.

I have found two more early producers with enormous fruit. Only about 5% of the trees around here were ripe by mid month. I'm not collecting fruit of average size unless the tree is exceptionally heavy bearing. I have done large air layers on these trees and took some cuttings. In a couple weeks I will be scouting for later ripening specimen. Sailmaster, I see a trade in our future.
