Superthrive

i had been looking locally for rooting hormone in gel/liquid form. I could only find powdered form and had read that this dried out the cutting. I know I can purchase Dip n Grow online. However, I came upon Superthrive in Home Depot. It seems to advertise itself as a panacea for all things green. It does mention that it can be used on cuttings. Directions mention to mix two tablespoons with five gallons of water and soak for 15-30 minutes.

Does anyone have experience with this product?

Thanks as always.

Steve

It doesn't have any hormone, just vit B1 as a 'stimulant'.  Studies show it doesn't help anything.

Ok, one vote for no. Thanks.

I would have to disagree. Not about superthrive for rooting. But I ship plants all over the country. And before evry shipping the get a drink of thrive. Helps reduce shock, and emplamented to a feeding program is wonderful. Now I am going by my own first hand testing here. But plants that got the thrive were stronger and less shocked. Even shipping bare root blackberries in summer.

Now for rooting I only use dip n grow. Used to use other but dng works so now that's all I use.

Great in hydroponics and areoponics as well.

Aw darn it. Good thing I have a small one

Dave,

Thanks for the different angle. So while you are not promoting for rooting, if I transplanted to bigger pots, a bit of this may help. Including it as part of a feeding regimen may also be beneficial.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve in refusing to buy online I tried the miraclo gro powder.  It seems fine and it does help a little. I am not sure about soaking cuting for 15 min.   I also used anothe rooTing with a big T and it is powder. I will post some pictures, I really like the results.

I use a serrated knife to do tiny scrapes at the surface, and put it under warm water, just enough to make the powder stick to and I give it a dip, shake excess and wait...wait..  this time, I left a few without the powder, and they are still not doing anything... if by tomorrow they don't show me some signs, I may have to operate on them and give them a bit of powder also.

only thing you have to be careful not to touch the cuttings on the area.. this stuff is an acid and eats your skin...so, gloves and extra care handling it.

Yea with the thrive I. They only got the 4oz bottles here. A cap full per gal for feeding or just watering. And 3 caps per gal for bare root soak 15 min or longer.

Grasa,

Thanks, I just received Madeira cuttings and I do not want to botch them. I want to make informed decisions to ensure best chances of success. I will probably use powder on one and leave the other alone. Do you score the cutting prior to applying the paste? I will look for your pictures. Thanks again,

Steve

I always score. Have a few threds with pics up. Not to deep now or it will rot. Just enought to scrape the surface to allow the harmone to penitrate better.

Dave,

Makes sense.I will look at your pics. Thanks!

Steve

Steve, no paste, you don't touch the powder.  You wet the cutting, give it a shake to 'rid' of excess water, and dip in the bottle, the powder will stick to the moisted cutting, you shake the excess powder inside it's bottle before removing the cutting from it, so you don't drop the powder everywhere.

I have a madeira in there also. I planted roots from my tree into it to speed up, I feel it is working.   What really matters is the constant heat and prope moist, the lesser moist, the better actually, I am finding out the hard way. the moss is best, when it is almost dried, and you just give a little sprinkle when checking the cuttings... all the water seems to go to the bottom and sog up there, each time I check my cuttings, I move them to the othe side, moving the moss around also.  No mold in the chamber, so far.

Apologies, I mis-interpreted your "scrape" to be scraping a bit of powder. Now understand it to be the cutting. Crystal clear. Thanks for clarifying for me.

Hey, Steve, I grew up in Plainedge, LI, went to High School 30+ years ago with a gal named Diana Burdo (Maiden name).  Any relation?

That's my mom, I never knew my Dad. Can i call you Daddy?

While this would explain my love of figs, I was only kidding. There are not many Burdo's around but I do not know her.

Ha, I about fell out of the chair on steve. I needed a good laugh and I think that did it.
Thanx
