Survivor

I have no idea why this one is still in the world of the living.

This was from a failed air layer . I had to cut the air layers before the first freeze last year.  I had 7, and 5 had no roots at all.  Those became cuttings. The other 3 had a few pathetic looking brown roots, so I stuck them in a 2 gal pot each, gave them some water and ignored them all winter in the garage, assuming they had died.  There's another thread here about one of them that I had noticed sporting a breba and some new leaves.  I started watering it and it's doing great,  but these other did nothing at all.

About 2 months later, I needed to re use the pots the other two "dead" ones were using.  Pulled one out.. no roots and brittle.  Put something else in it's pot.  Pulled the other one out, but it offered some resistance as it came out.  It still have a few pathtic (but not too brown) roots! What!?  Scrape test near the tip (this is a 3 foot long "cutting") and it was green under the bark.  ooookay..  So i gently put it back in the pot and gave it some water.  The terminal bud turned green.... then, a few days later, brown again..  it looked dead for sure now.  Ocassionally, i'd splash it with some water..  after all.. it's sitting in full sun.

Last week, I noticed the buds getting green again.  look at it now!  It's more solid in the pot now, so it must have some roots.   This thing just won't die.  It's crooked as hell, but alive..

BTW.. It's one of those "Peter's Honey NOT" (possibly LSU Gold) that I gave out to a few people.  Those cuttings have proved to be very strong.
