SWC standing water question

I got a test self watering pot today, 16 inch size, from a HD. I like it, it is large enough for a small 1 year tree. My question is the following.
The pot has a lip at the bottom where you water it from. After it is completely filled, you can see the water.
In the summer time this will become a standing water source that I am sure will attract insects to breed there (like mosquitoes) .
How do you deal with this standing water? Do you close the access with something?

Here is a 18 inch pot link that looks like mine

that's a good question , i just started using the wamart version .the 16" is $8 how much is the HD version?

Could you put a piece of window screen over the opening. That would stop the bugs and still allow you to pour water through it.
"gene"

GOOD IDEA GENE

If you flush the water out once a week, or so, it will interrupt the life cycles of the bugs.

Baust55 the pot was $10 with taxes.
Genecolin, I thought of that too but wanted to find out what people do who already use them.
Jon, how do I flush a pot with an attached bottom? I cant imagine tilting the pot itself without disturbing a plant, esp. doing this once a week. Or you mean more like applying some water pressure through a hose?

Those are all good suggestions but there must be someone who dealt with this before, no? ...

those pests live in the soil..regardless. a little standing water wont mae a difference, I think, they are more likely to lay their eggs in the soil

You can use mosquito plunks.
