Syrian fig

Syrian 6

What color would you call this fig?

The taste is amazing. It has a nice honey/molasses flavor. When you see the skin, you don't expect to see the pulp to be of that color.

Grise, gray? Somewhat the description of "Gray Midsummer's Day" on Jon's site: "skin gray drawing on purple".

Silver?   Ash??

Call it...'sunset' inside. The outside also reminds me of a sunset with clouds at the horizon. Hence that muted or masked look that Jon calls 'gray'.

I enjoy your pictures and descriptions of the flavor Bass. That's a pretty fig. It looks glaucus grey over golden skin with reddish tints.

I wanted a fig with a molasses flavor, and had read that Zidi had this flavor, so now I have one. Too bad I will never tastes it's figs.

I love molasses-tasting figs, they taste better the longer you leave them on the tree.

Beautiful fig and photo!
About how big is this fig Bass?

It's about a bit larger than a quarter. It's very tasty. I have about 15 unknown Syrian figs that I'm evaluating, this was the first to ripen. A couple have dropped their fruits which could be an indication of a smyrna type fig.

I should have a lot more by next year.

So this one got named Sweet Joy?

The original Syrian 6 was lost, but I found the same tree coming from the same village in Syria and growing in Allentown, Pa for several years. I sampled the figs for 2 years in the row and it was identical in every aspect. I renamed it Sweet Joy.

This is a recent photo,

Bass of those 15 varieties is there any unique or interesting varieties that we could possibly look forward to?

I have to put a list of all the ones that fruited for me and if I have photos.
Here's one that I posted the other day.

I have a theory.  I think there are more figs that have been smuggled into back east than here in California and it's at least partially due to the fact that fig trees weren't readily available at most nurseries, etc. so many immigrants smuggled them in.  I've only know of one person I know here in California that has smuggled in a fig (many years ago, but I only found out about it a couple of months ago).  He also smuggled in Italian prune cuttings in the barrels of his double barreled shotgun.  He probably couldn't do that today. :)

Yes on the east coast we have many immigrant communities... you can take a ride through Newark, NJ and see many Portuguese growing figs, Brooklyn, staten island, and many old Italian neighborhoods in Philly have many fig trees all were brought from the old country.

We have many immigrant communities within California also but I think they were probably mostly satisfied with the selection of figs that were already here when they arrived.

I think also the main ports were on the eastern seaboard for many immigrants so less would have been smuggled into the west coast is my thought.

more people love ny. not beacuse they have been there, but because, they might have never heard of ny mets or nicks.. but they have heard sinatra singing "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere". at least that's my threory. lol either that or new people coming into america are looking for readily available jobs and most large cities with ton of easy to find jobs are on east coast.

The Baltimore area also has several Italian and Greek communities with figs that were brought over, little Italy has a bunch of large trees that have been around for a while

Chivas, my grandfather came to California three times from Madeira with the first being about 1910 and the last time around 10 years later when he brought my grandmother with him.  I believe all of his ship rides arrived in NY and then he took a train trip direct to California (my dad has told me of how my grandmother wanted to go back home by the time she got on the train).  There are many immigrants in CA that arrived directly from their country of origin.  In the last 50 years or so most have arrived by air, of course, and skipped long trips from the east.

Syrian 6  color is mauve on my screen.  Amazing like porcelain.

Here's the leaves of another Syrian fig I have. It's a Syrian honey fig.

Wow Bass, those leaves are beautiful. It looks  like Ice Crystals' leaves. What do the figs look like from that tree?

I just picked a fig from this tree this morning. Very sweet honey fig.
