Take a wild guess... purple fig.

I received cuttings this fall from old in-ground trees in Easton Md. They came labeled as "purple fig", BT and "small red fig, very sweet".
The PF is really vigorous, all of the cuttings struck nearly instantly. The leaves I am seeing are not showing hardly any lobing at this time, the roots are really thick like spaghetti.  I know it's way early to tell for sure, but this fig already seems very distinctive to me and I thought someone might have a guess. Thanks.

Unfortunately w/o a picture of leaves and fruit, a guess could not even be attempted.  If the cuttings rooted, it may take years before the leaves and fruit would resemble the mother tree. Can you post pics of mother tree and fruits?

I wouldn't  be able  to attempt being new but w/ pics, some of the seasoned vets may take a stab.

Nope sorry, never seen the mother, just know the figs are purple, the leaves are currently not very palmate, and the roots are thicker than average. I just thought someone might have a guess, I'll wait a few years then or see if I can get photos in the summer. Thanks.

The plot thickens... One of the purple figs now has distinctive VdB leaves and has produced one tiny fig which quickly turned purple in the sun. So that one I am going to call Easton Violette for now, and might snap that fig off so it grows more. It showed no signs of FMV and that made me very happy, although it has not grown fast overall. The others labeled purple I think are actually a green fig, let me explain...

I got the cuttings from somebody who's Granny planted the trees close together over 50 years ago and they are a hedge now,  her daughter currently lives at that house and the groundskeeper was the one who took the cuttings and labeled them for me. When I gave the nice lady who arranged for the cuttings some trees and told her the names: small red fig very sweet, purple, and brown turkey (has Bruswick type leaves and is exceptionally vigorous, but not setting any figs yet); she said "what about the green ones, some are green". So I think I know what is going on now.

I sent out a few cuttings labeled "PF" for purple fig, did anyone else get the violette?

So the PF for 'Purple Fig' is actually a green? Sorry I went on The Brewmasters tour at Budweiser in NH so it's a little harder than usually for me to follow.

I think I have 2 that may have been purple from you. I'll have to look in the morning.

That's also if I remember. LOL

That is my best guess, I think I got a lil eat stroke today though. I have tons of the ones with whole leaves and most have figs set, so I hope we will see what they are this year. They do also make lobed leaves, but not the turkey foot shape like VdB.
I can't figure how I did not notice the difference in this one plant last year? It explains the green fig that is supposed to also be there according to the the Granddaughter's new report. Maybe you could use your detective skills and fig-ure it out for me after you get some rest ;)

Maybe is a good word to use.LOL

Here are my pics

1st- says red

Leaf

2nd- Said Unk Purple

I either killed the others or I can't find them.

The second pic looks the same as the immature leaves of my Mega-Celeste and Khaz.

Yup, that is consistent with what I have. The red looks like White Marseilles to me, but neither it or WM have set any figs for me yet. Hopefully I will get some pics of the mothers this year. I told the person who gave me the cuttings that they gave me 4 varieties instead of 3 and asked if they could get some more of the Viollete when there are leaves and figs on the tree so they can tell the difference between varieties.

I remembered today that I did notice the difference last year in the one that looks like VdB, but thought one of the ones labeled BT got mixed in with the purple. They are very different though, Violette having decurrent leaves mostly. It is growing again so I think I will let that one fig stay and hope it ripens without stunting the tree too much so I can make a few more plants.

Yeah I think I remember the names were BT, RED, AND PF.

I may have a PF floating around but for some reason half of my cuttings died last year as opposed to this year.

Bad news for us Dominick. I had a couple ripe figs today... They were green brown with a pink center and split worse than I have ever seen before, all the way to the top of the stem. We have had lots of rain here but...The taste was not all that great either, not bad but not really sweet or figgy, it had a refreshing taste. I will get a pic when the next ones ripen to see if it is a known variety before I get rid of them. Sorry.

Funny how some figs are immune to the rain and others just explode.

Thanks for looking out for me.

Never know about maturity. It is a big factor for me.

This one did a little better with the help of some nice weather and tasted much better. I enjoyed it after slicing that moldy eye off. It has been growing in a weeping habit for me.

hmm...interesting shade of purple

Yeah, and the one that is supposed to be red looks just like Italian Honey and the Brown Turkey is probably Brunswick. They were free so I am not complaining, a little sad that none look purple though. The one odd purple may be one of the Brunswicks and showed odd leaves because the trunk was sunburned or something. Is this like a merit badge or something, figs4frustation? You want one Ruben?

Maybe Blond Turkey?

LOL. I have 5 Brunswick plants with the parent in-ground. I think I'm good. Thanks for offering though. Noticed you don't have a wish list, Brent. Not looking?

btw, those leaves are not Brunswick.

I meant the one pictured above, the "Blond Turkey", my best guess is Trojano. It is a nice fig aside from the splitting, I guess I will keep one to see if it improves but I have a half dozen and can take cuttings. Jon you too.

I am just about done assembling my collection, aside from some very hot and rare varieties. My list is posted here- http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Annual-WishList-of-6-Cuttings-for-201213.-5898435

Well I think this is as good as I can do this season, a raccoon or something seems to like them, especially. It did do much better with rain in cooler weather, still a little mold starting in the eye though. The bottom half was really good, top still not ripe. Does anybody have an idea? New fig? Can I give it a better name?
