Taking a sucker/shoot from young tree?

My Guilbeau has a fast growing shoot coming out of the potting soil
This plant was rooted Jan. this year

I would like to give a fellow figster in a nearby town a plant off this tree/plant, when and how would I go about doing this?
PS, remember cover all bases in the procedure because Ya'll know me.

Thanks in advance.

Cecil,
you will get a few ways on how to to it from members which will be helpful.
This is one of them.
This has always worked for me,  you can use a coat hanger and make  " J " then
with hand i make a trench to bend sucker into and i trim off all But  leaves on the end of sucker then i gently put into the trench and sceure with the J hook and water it and cover with soil and add more water. I keep the soil moist, in time it roots and then i severe from the parent and put in cup .
Its basically same thing as an airlayer which as you know is still attached to parent plant and the stem in the airlayer cup is filled with dirt just like i explained above.
What i like about doing this is its easy as stem is right there at soil level to work with.

Martin,
Wouldn't it be a little late in the year to do that?
I mean that is about the same as an air layer ain't it?

Yes same as airlayer.
Ive done it like this and left it till spring , long as it does not get up and run away its ok. No really you can leave it and in spring it can be checked and severed cause it will have roots by then if started now it will be in dormancy come winter and live cause its attached to parent long as parent makes it thru winter.
If you want just root it another way im thinking it might not get a chance to harden off by winter and the fella your giving it do might have to then deal with that. Something to consider unless you just wait till spring to give to him. Ya know Cecil last season when i had started plants real late in season i had to bring in house and constantly baby them i wont do that anymore its a real pain for me althoughn it was fun i must admit. If i had a heated green house the misses probably would make me put a bed in there.   ; )

Thanks Martin,

The shoot is growing at the rate of about 2" daily
And I quit fertilizing the last of Aug.

I think I will leave it be until next spring and air layer (or try)
to air layer it for him next spring, I have a real bad habit of being impatient, This time I'm not going go there.
Martin, I figure yer gonna be sleeping in the Jeep soon anyhow.
Again thanks.......PS JA are ya reading this?
