Tallahassee Fig Orchard Video

Apologies for a rather crappy job. It was my first attempt at using the iphone video app, so don't mind the out of focus quality, the finger over lens fiascoes, the stuttering narration. Probably not a candidate for an academy award nomination.

But hey, it's got figs!

Correction: Orchard was started in 2011 not 2001.  Pardon the brain-fart.

Frank, that was a great video..... tks for posting, maybe someday I'll get a personal tour. The orchard looks great.

Questions for you, did any of the figs that you planted in SeptemberNOT have any dieback?  and did any that you planted in spring have any dieback?
I suspect that there was not enough time for the September figs to establish a solid root mass and may have suffered because of it, versus the spring planted trees had plenty of time to establish roots and suffered much less..?

You are a really nice guy for letting the passionfruit live, they are one of my favorites as well. Keep it in check though. I planted a few of the purple type nearby some figs and the spread and vigor has been astounding. I pulled many, many new shoots emerging inside the figs canopies this year, they pull out very easily though and seem to have roots more like orchids.
Very nice place you have there.

Frank,

Great quality for a phone and very good narration for your first fig video. I cannot wait for TFOV Season 1 Episode 2.

Thanks for posting the video, very good job. Good looking trees wish I had that space. And wow, beautiful part of the country you live in

Very nice orchard!  What will you do with all the fruit when those trees mature?  (That's the question I get.  All but a few of mine are still in pots though until I get my next home and plant them in ground.)

Thanks, I enjoyed watching that. Not a crappy video at all.

Everything is so green! Quite a stark contrast to this part of very dry California.

Nice!  Hope you get lots of great figs!  I love passionfruit but they wont fruit in my climate.

Great movie and a great fig orchard. Wow really laid out nice. I couldn't have done the speaking role, because I would butcher the names so badly no one would know what kind of figs they are. Also loved the cameo shots of the pooch..nice touch. Have 2 labs and they keep me company all the time. You really didn't have to show us where the snakes and croc's are located.

You also mention where your from, my friend Mario is from that part of Italy too. He lives there 3 or 4 monthes a year, usually in the summer. Matter of fact he's leaving on the 11 of June. His granddaughter is getting married. He lives right on the water on the east side of calabria. Lives in New Jersey for 3 or 4 monthes and winters in Florida, east coast not far from ft. pierce. Would you happen to live near there? Just wondering.

Congrats Nice orchard. Hope you can up-date on some of the figs when they ripen especially the figs you grew up with.

If I find an outstanding variant I would sure like to send it to your orchard.

Thank you all for your kind comments...

Ben, it didn't matter whether the trees were planted in September of 2011 or  September of 2005. They were all killed, ironically, during the warmest winter in Tallahassee history. The freeze that did it came after an interval of 6-8 weeks of Spring-like temperatures. I am hoping that this was a once in a life-time event.

Rufusmd, the problem of too many fruits has already been visited upon me by my two poolside Almas. It is a nice problem to have.

Hey Luke, I was born on the West Coast of Calabria .Tallahassee is in the Northwest part of the State. If your friend Mario is into figs, I would be happy to share Calabrian cuttings with him or with any other Calabrian from F4F. Calabrians have this unfortunate reputation of beaing hard-headed. Not true. The rumor was started by either the Sicilians or the Napolitani who are the true hard-headed Italians. :)

Paul, thanks a bunch. You have been more than generous with your gift of the Melanzana Merdoscola ( cuttings are doing great, btw ) plus putting me in contact with Cecil for the Zucchini. If anything strikes your fancy that I have, I would be happy to reciprocate.

Bass, I appreciate the compliment, especially from a fig connoisseur such as yourself.

Martin, I take much inspiration from the pictures that you post.

Jimmie, check your IM.

Hi Frank,

Nice video!

And the promised Zucchini is doing great after a heart stopping root pruning!(It has put on about 8 new leafs since the root pruning. On 5-14-012

It will be a pleasure to send you that plant!

Regards,

Fmd i laugh when you said the part about hard heads. My Dad used to say that about Calabrians i recall but probably in a joking manner.
He was as hardheaded as they came being from small town called Mola di Bari
Mother side from Sicily well that was something else also .

That's Fig Disneyland!   But without the mechanical alligators.

Great video.  Thank you for sharing.  That big old tree is very very nice.
