Tanglefoot

Just wanted to share, this product is used for ants and crawling insects. I have not used it yet but it is available on the internet. If you want to save a few bucks on shipping and have an Ace hardware near you, they can probably order it for you if they don't carry as a regular item. shipping on the net was more than product which I paid about $8 for 15 oz tub

A product that works as i use it on all my bearing trees after eating fig with ants in it some years back.
No more ants period.

DO NOT, DO NOT apply directly to the bark of the tree. Put something (rubber, plastic, or whatever around the tree, and put the Tanglefoot on it. It works well, but will destroy the bark of the tree if it comes in contact with the bark.

Thanks Jon for the heads up. I was reading the instructions and it does say to apply a water proof tape or band of some sort. Will duct tape or electrical tape work?

I was going to apply raw to bark but hesitated to ask first. Glad I did
Thanks

Always good to ask Sal.
Heck you dont want to harm your trees.
I do thinks backwards i suppose. I put it right on the bark.

So, Martin,

Have you had any bark damage to your trees with the Tanglefoot?  I'm thinking of applying it to the pots my figs are in.

Thanks,

noss

Maybe you can see maybe not.
Above the 2 knots down low is faint ring from 2008, then a little higher a darker ring from 2009.
This is when i applied useing plastic cut from top of coffee can nd took my time.
This season the goopy mess above that ring is when one does in haste and uses the tube itself..... Dont ask why i did this way !...  ; )
In short tree is fine, but dont listen to me i don't do things according to directions but tree wont die and neither will the others i have.

I use masking tape with the sticky side out, the tape will break as the tree growsand last around a year.  Apply the tangle foot while wearing some disposable gloves to keep from having to use a solvent to clean your hands.

  Jon

Shark has a good idea. I used 2-3" strips cut from inner tubes, tied on with thin strips of the same. Allowed some give as the tree grew.

I put it on an orange tree many years ago.. It has not died, but the ENTIRE trunk looks like it has a really, really, really bad rash, and the bark continues to flake and peel like it had leprosy.  Gives every indication that at some point the tree will give it up as the bark is destroyed.

Tanglefoots ingredients
Good ole Castor oil
Vegtable Wax
Natural Gum Resins

now it does say to use tape but i see nothing to hurt the tree, i also use on my american elm and other yard trees smaered on trunk. The pruneing seal i use  which is like tar and has petroleum stuff in it i would think would do more harm but it works on the wounds and seals em up i dont use tape first ( being sarcastic) in a nice way.

please read my Disclaimer below

But i dont advocate useing tanglefoot on directly on your fig trees like i do cause if your tree dies dont come back "Barking" at me !
I just show my exprience in 3 season useing it directly on tree.

Now orange tree may be a whole different thing in equation . As what i found reading .

I cant find fig bark disease but found this about orange tree bark problems.

Orange trees are prone to many forms of fruit tree diseases, which can devastate a crop and its harvest capabilities. Viral, bacterial and fungal bark diseases can affect a citrus plant's bark, fruit and leaves, leaving the tree unable to produce. Several viral and fungal diseases in particular exhibit symptoms of bleeding, shelling, scaling and flaking of the bark.

Exocortis is an orange tree virus that is also known as "scaly butt." It leads to severe and giant cracks in the bark of the tree, causing the orange tree to split. The bark eventually flakes off and kills the citrus tree.

Martin, I was watching this thread because I knew you placed TFoot directly on your tree and was wondering how your tree was growing.  I saw TFoot in my local feed store and was tempted to get some but did not.  I had an ant problem months back this season but placed Andro Ant Baits and that seem to work for my trees.  The bait feeds the ants and kills the whole colony.  I haven't had an ant problem since.  I did notice that whenever I had a Hollier fig getting ripe, there would be 3 or 4 of these large insects that looked like ants with long red legs.  They only showed up on my Hollier fig tree.  Don't know what they are but they are gone now.  Martin, how tall is your tree?  It looks very healthy!  How old is it?

Dennis i post some pictures in thread called "For Snaglpus" along with some information.
