TASTE RESULTS --- FOLLOW UP

Hi,

I picked the Blk. Triano fig early this morning. I posted a photo of a few days ago.  I waited until it was good and ripe. Took it inside walked downstairs to my pc to get my camera. Returned to the kitchen and proceeded to cut this bad boy in half. It was so lack luster of a presentation of the interior of that fig that I didn't even bother to take a photo.

I just handed one half to the wife and I ate the other half excepting a dry fig. I ate my half first and all I could say was OUTSTANDING. I could not believe it for a first crop fig. I told the wife I think you’re going to be surprised when you eat it. Her reaction was immediate after the first bite. She said and I quote DON'T GIVE THIS TREE AWAY. Then she wanted to know the name of the fig.

She agreed one of the tastiest figs we both ever ate. A very, very sweet fig with a nice figgy flavor but the inside was a drab white and looked to be on the dry side. My first impressions where all wrong. I only hope the other figs on this tree taste like this fig did.

If any of you have this tree it would be nice to hear from your taste buds

and what they think of it. Could be it's the 100 degree heat we are having

that accounts for its outstanding flavor who knows.

Regards

Lou

Hi Lou.  Thanks for sharing this.  That's the type of moment we all are working towards, everytime you plant a fruit tree.

Do you know where one might find a Black Triano fig tree or cuttings?

And it is fairly cold harder (to zone 7 or so?).

Enjoy my friend!  ;-)

Best wishes.

Thanks for the feedback Lou. I managed to root 2 cuttings of this variant & its going to get lots of TLC, thanks to MA. My boss at home will be most happy to know I have another winner. I am going to tell my bro to baby his little tree.

By the way Lou, how old was yr plant ? I guess I can't wait knowing its sooooo yummy.

Replying back to Paully and John,

My tree is on the young side. Below are two photos to show what the tree looks like (size wise) at the present time.

I have heard from a friend or two that they as well have eaten a couple of the first crop fig from their trees. They stated the fig was sort of so so and not that sweet but had a good fig flavor. All I can say is my experience was just the opposite but as I stated it may be the weather having something to do with the taste of my fig. We are in an unusual heat way in PA zone 5. Remember I waited until the fig was good a ripe. When I harvested it all I did was place my fingers on it and it came off in my hand. Did not even need the usual quarter turn to get it to come off the tree.

As you can see my tree is small and I don't feel like I should cut any cuttings at this point in time. Let’s wait and see what the regular crop taste like if they ripen. That will really tell the story much better than just the taste of one fig.

Hi Lou
i say good for you !!!
I can imagine the work and care you put into your trees and now you can enjoy a little bit as well and hopefully the main crop will be just as good and even better for you and  your family. With age as you know it will get even better i hope for you.
Thanks for pictures and hope to see more in future of your plants.

Thanks Lou.

And hope you are well also Martin.

I would like to second all that Martin said, and thank you for sharing these great pictures. Your plants look great Lou.

We are trying to build a nice fig orchard here as well.  At present we have nearly 30 different varieties, but the real holy grail is taste.  So we are always looking for the ultimate fig.

Productivity is another major plus, and so far our new Excel looks like a winner in this regard.  It even has two figs on one node (now that's just showing off, don't you think?), and is really loaded, especially for a new tree.  We will let you know about the taste when they are ripe, but so far the Excel looks very promising, and is a strong grower here.

Please do keep us posted on your progress Lou, and I will do the same.

Best wishes to all.
