Tasted my first ever dark fig tonight. Gino Black

A wonderful member sent me a dormant Gino's Black last winter.  It took off in the spring, then became stagnant.  A few weeks ago, I up-potted from a 3 gallon to 5 gallon bucket while it had baby figs on it.  I thought for sure those figs would drop, since the brebas did.  To my surprise, they started swelling and turning dark the past few days.  I promptly put up bird netting and I was able to pick my first ripe fig tonight.  It's a small fig, but WOW, so flavorful.  Very sweet with rich concentrated flavor with barely any seed crunch.  I split it with my wife and she loved it.  We both wanted more!  But I was thrilled to finally taste a dark fig.  I'm hoping the remaining 5 figs ripen without any issues.

Congratulations!  It's great when your work pays off.

WooHoo glad to hear it's good.  I have 2 Gino Blks started but no sign of figs. I'll enjoy yours vicariously :-)

Man I'll take any color figs.  ;)
I will say that 6 out of 9 trees I planted in ground this year are dark figs.  :)

Frank...congratulations on the the Gino's Black...I enjoy the dark figs too, but I have been really enjoying my light figs as well...they're not as strong in flavor as the dark varieties, but they do have their own unique, refreshing flavor...I usually enjoy my ripe figs early in the morning(6:30 - 7:00am) when I'm watering all by trees...as I go past each tree I see the ones that have been ripening for the past week, and when they look and feel just right, off they come, and I eat them as I move on to the next tree...what a way to start the day !!

That sounds like a great start to the day, Vince!  I do love the lighter figs too.  They all hit the spot.  In 5 years or less, I should be swimming in figs.

Congrats ! I do grow light figs , prefer to dark, but they each have their good qualities for me.

Way to go I too am looking forward to next year and hoping for some of my little Gono's Black to fruit.
